ENGLISH 3 (QUARTER 1, WEEK 1)

S.Y. 2021-2022

Directions: You only need to answer two activities in this module. Only the two activities in letter I will be answered.
Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper. Use a black pen in answering. Do not forget to write your name on the
paper, or it will not be scored.

If you have questions about this lesson, you may send me a message through Messenger from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

A. Review of Previous lesson or Presenting of New Lesson

Look at the pictures of two healthy children and two unhealthy children in the hospital.
 Which of the pictures show healthier children?
 Why are the children in picture A healthier and stronger?
 Why are the children in picture B in the hospital?

PICTURE A PICTURE B

Yes, you are right!

The children in picture B are healthier because they obey their parents and the guidelines of the
Department of Education.

The children in picture A are sick and they are in the hospital, probably, because they did not obey
their parents and the guidelines of the Department of Health.

B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson

For this lesson, you will read a short dialogue of a family who talked about Bam and Tam.
 You will learn how to read the dialogue and to note important details from what you
read.
 You will also learn to infer or guess how the characters feel.
Likewise, you will know how to make predictions.
 Now, read the dialogue aloud. You may ask the assistance of your parents or older
brother or sister to read it for you if you are having difficulty.

C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the Lesson

Reading of the Dialogue.

Obedience is Important
Bam Papa!
Tam Mama!
Bam and Tam Please help us!
Papa and What happened to you?
Mama
Bam Papa, I don’t feel well. I feel sick. My head is so hot.
Tam My head and stomach are aching. I could not get up.
Tam I feel so weak, Mama.
Mama Did you go out of our house lately?
Bam Last Saturday, we went out to play in the vacant lot.
Tam We saw some children playing, so we went there to play with them.
Papa Maybe, that is the reason for getting sick.
Mama Bam, Tam, you forgot what we and your teachers told you.
Do not go out of the house for now because the pandemic brought about by
COVID-19 has not been fully solved.
Papa Let’s go to the hospital. We need to see the doctor for a checkup.
Bam and Tam You are right Papa, Mama. Next time, we will always remember.
At the hospital, it was confirmed that both children were infected with COVID-19. They stayed in
the hospital for 14 days. They were given strong medicines and oxygen to help them breathe
easily. After 14 days in the hospital, they went home and were still advised to have home
quarantine for 14 days.

At home…
Papa Now that you are healed from COVID-19, let us try to recall what happened. Why
did you get sick?
Bam We did not follow your reminders.
We played outside the house with some children.
Tam We did not take care of our health.
We did not eat healthy food.
Papa Now that you are well, what have you learned from what happened?
Bam We will always follow your advice and reminders.
Tam We will also take care of our health.
Bam and We will just read books and review our lessons when we do not go to school.
Tam That’s a promise!!!
Mama Very good!
Let us thank God for making you well.
Bam and Tam promised to follow what their parents and teachers tell them.
They also promised to take care of their health.

D. Discussing new concepts

Selection Follow-up/Comprehension Check
 You need to answer these questions orally to help you learn the lessons on noting
details, making inferences on character’s traits and feelings and making predictions.
 Please review to their definitions under Concept part on page 2 for better
understanding.

Answer the questions orally.

1. Who are the characters in the dialog?
2. Who called their Papa and Mama?
3. Why did they call their parents?
4. What may be happening to the children?
5. How did they feel at that moment?
6. How did they get sick?
7. At that moment, how did Bam and Tam feel? What about their parents?
8. If you are the brother or sister of these two sick children, what would you feel?
9. Where did their parents bring them?
10. Why should they see a doctor?
11. What illness/sickness did they acquire?
12. What do you know about COVID-19?
13. How were the COVID-19 patients treated?
14. What lessons did they learn from their experience?
15. What kind of children are they before they got sick?
16. Do they have the right promises?
17. What do you do to protect yourself from this COVID-19 sickness?

Today, you will also learn the lesson on Sequencing Events.

Recall the events that happened in the dialogue and answer the questions orally.
1. What happened first?
2. What happened next?
3. After knowing what Bam and Tam were feeling, where did the family go?
4. What happened to them in the hospital?
5. After getting well, where did the children stay?
Now, look at the pictured events. Try to arrange the events according to how they happened in the
dialogue. Write number 1 for the first event, 2 and 3 for the next two events on a separate sheet of
paper.

Bam and Sam were brought to

_______ the hospital to have them
checked by a doctor.

After going out of the hospital,

Bam and Tam have to stay at
_______ home for a 14-day home
quarantine.

One day, Bam and Tam called

their parents because they felt
________ very sick.

______

Now, answer the following questions.

1. What helped you arrange the events correctly?
2. What lesson did you actually learn when you numbered the events according to how they
happened in a story?
 Remember that when we sequence events, we arrange the order of events according to how
they happened or will happen.
Sequencing Events Activity
Let’s do this activity.
Observe the pictured events.
These are some of the skills boys will learn to do as they grow.
 Arrange the activities according to how they will happen or in the right order when they will be
learned.
Write number 1 for the first event, 2 and 3 for the next two events.

The boy learns to walk. The boy learns to ride a The boy learns to crawl.
bicycle.

 Remember that when you sequence events, you arrange them according to how they
happened or how they will happen.
 In sequencing events, you may use numbers (1, 2, 3, 4…) or sometimes letters (a, b, c, d…).

E. Continuation of the Discussion of New Concepts

From the previous activity, you learned how to sequence events.
Today you will learn the skill of making inferences.
 Answer the questions and do the following activities.
Which of the following made Bam and Tam sick?
Which of the following will make Bam and Tam healthier and protected from any illness?
eating fruits following home not following eating too much
regularly quarantine home quarantine junk food

drinking enough living in a dirty eating vegetables washing of hands

clean water place regularly regularly

having enough rest following social wearing of face taking a bath

and sleep distancing masks when sick regularly
or outside the
house

taking vitamins using too much using protective things

regularly gadgets when needed

Let’s discuss your answers.

Why did you select those pictures?
You have selected those pictures because, probably, these are what Bam and Tam were doing or
practicing before they got sick.

You are right!!!

Maybe in the past, they did not take care of their bodies very well.
Do you know that the activity you answered helped you make intelligent guesses or inferences?

What you actually did when you made intelligent guesses of what happened in the past is you
tried to “make inferences” because tried to guess what might had happened based on the evidence
that Bam and Tam are sick.

Make a good inference for each illustrated situation. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

A. The boy joined and won the race.

B. The boy joined and lost the race.

A. The children will go to school.

B. The children will play in the park.

F. Developing Mastery
From the previous activity, you learned how to make inferences.
Try to do this activity on making inferences.

 Encircle the best inference for each given situation. Encircle the letter of the best inference.
Given Situation Possible Inferences
1. The thunder boomed.
The lightning flashed. A. The dog is afraid or scared.
My dog hid under the table, B. The dog is happy.
2. The grass and the school A. The Principal watered the plants in the plant
ground are wet. box.
B. It rained last night.

 For today, you will learn how to predict outcomes.

 Remember, in the previous activity, you selected each picture which you think will make
Bam and Tam healthier.
 Today, answer the following questions orally.

fruits follow home not observing home taking vitamins

quarantine quarantine regularly

drinking clean washing hands eating vegetables taking a bath

water regularly regularly

having following social Wearing of using of these

enough rest and distancing face masks when sick protective things
sleep or outside the house when needed

1. Why did you not select these pictures?

2. Do you think these will make Bam and Tam healthier?
3. Will doing these practices protect them from any illness, like COVID 19?
4. How will each help them become healthy and strong?

 Do you know what you actually did when you tried to guess how these will help Bam and Tam
become healthier?
You actually made some predictions.
 You tried to guess what might happen in the future based on what you already know and the
evidences found in the text.
 In the dialogue, Tam said that they did not eat healthy food so you predicted that when a child
eats healthy food and follow good health habits, he or she will become healthier and stronger.
 The activity actually helped you make good predictions on what will probably happen if Bam
and Tam will follow the health habits you identified.

 Now, always remember that you use clues or evidences written in the text to make intelligent
guesses or predictions.
 You use your previous knowledge on the evidences given in the text to formulate or make our
predictions.

Let’s have some examples.

Look at these pictured situations and try to guess what will happen next. Say your predictions
orally.

The sky started to get dark. Lightning If Bam and Tam will always listen and
flashes. Thunders roar. It became windy. participate in the discussion, what will
What might happen next? probably happen?

G. Finding Practical Applications of Concepts and Skills in Daily Living

Answer these questions orally.
1. Why do we need to take care of our bodies?
2. Why should we need to be obedient to our parents and teachers?
3. Why do we need to follow the protocols or guidelines set by the Department of Health?
4. What will happen if we do not follow health protocols?
5. What will happen to you if you get infected with COVID -19?
6. For those who got infected with COVID-19, what probably have they done that made them
sick?
7. What made you guess what might happen to you if you violate DOH protocols and your
parents’ reminders?
8. What helped you guess or infer the reasons for getting infected by COVID-19?

 Your skills in noting details, making inferences and predictions helped you read the text
with understanding. They also helped you get the messages of the story or text.

Values Integration:
 Always remember that it is important to understand the stories or text you read and remember
the details given.
 Likewise, it is good to learn reading skills, such as; sequencing events, making inferences and
predicting outcomes because these will make you understand and remember the details from
the stories you read.
 With the spread of COvid-19 disease and other illnesses, it is important to take care of your
bodies and to follow the advice of your parents and teachers to become healthier and
stronger.

H. Making Generalization and Abstractions about the Lesson

After reading the notes and accomplishing the activities from this lesson, you learned some
Reading Skills. You learned how to note details, sequence events, make inferences and
predict outcomes.

I. Evaluating Learning
A. Read the short text and answer the questions that follow.

Today is October 1, 2020. It was reported last night, through a local news, that Philippines is now
COVID-19 free. All COVID patients previously infected have all gotten well. There was no new case
