Founded in 1930, Whitelegg Machines Ltd are currently based


in the market town of Dorking, Surrey just 30 km to the south of
London.

Whitelegg began manufacturing coil winding machines and ac-


cessories in 1940. This established a link with the manufacture
and repair of electric motors and over the years Whitelegg
have consistently added to their range of equipment to mirror
the changes in technology and customer’s requirements.

VARIOMAT—M5 HYDRAULIC PULL-OFF UNIT
With the VARIOMAT-M5 special pull-off unit, ball bearings, couplings, fan
blades, slip ring assemblies, etc., with diameters of 20-280 mm can be re-
moved precisely and rationally using pull-off devices fitted with our equipment
with a pulling force of 45 kN (approximately 5 t pressure) and a stroke of 180
mm.
The VARIOMAT V5 is designed for simple ergonomic operation by one per-
son, and its light weight design makes it suitable for use not only in the work-
shop, but also as an on-site device for installation work.

Operated via a drive unit consisting of a compact 700 bar single stage pump
with a minimum air requirement of 250 l/min. The pump is equipped with a
pressure limiting valve to enable simple control of the desired operating pres-
sure, which is steplessly adjustable between 0 and 50 Nm. The forward and
backward movement of the cylinder is regulated by the foot pedal attachment
to the side of the unit.
Depending on the specific requirements, our 2 or 3 arm pull-off devices,
types 844 and 845, can be employed to remove the parts concerned, with
pull-off hooks for clamping depths of 100-250 mm.

WHITELEGG VPI Burn-off Ovens

• For removing all combustible materials from motor components such


as stators. All other material (in-organic parts) left as fine un-bonded
ash that is easily removed. Saves you time and money.
• These burn-off ovens use controlled pyrolysis to achieve the above.
Gas is incinerated at high temperature. Incineration produces water
vapour and carbon dioxide which are passed through the stack.
• Very economical—low running costs for either natural gas or oil burn-
ing versions giving a fast pay back time.
• Heavy duty cart with track, 3 meters of insulated stack, rain cap, storm
collar and accessories are included.
• A normally loaded VPI 150 has a cycle time of 3-4 hours
• Operating temperature of 370-400°C
• Fully automatic cleaning cycle

bearing housings, fans, propellers) and other industrial components.

sive operation. Many manual and
machine systems are available but
fail to provide a sufficiently aggres-
sive approach to removing the te-
nacious grease, carbon and other
soils which stick to the component
surface.
POWER WASHERS employ specially engineered pumping systems to
give high hydraulic impact using a heated water based wash solution.
For ease of loading, the components are mounted onto a swing away ro-
tating turntable and the high pressure jets are mounted in a non-
synchronised oscillating “ Power Blast Manifold” which ensures efficient
cleaning of all surfaces. The wash solution is re-circulated within the ma-
chine and there is no discharge to the drains.

• Constructed from robust aluminium castings and high grade steel.


• The wire guide is driven to and from by reversing dog gears via a lead
screw. The traverse direction can be changed manually by a lever. The
reverse carriage can be released by a quick release nut and moved to
any desired position.
• The tailstock is provided with a ball race and quick release lever. The
machine is provided with a universal winding spindle with cones for
easy clamping of the bobbins.
• The two stage wire range is selected by a lever and adjusting wheel.
An easily read scale shows the wire pitch setting.
• The machines are driven by a single or three phase motor incorporat-
ing an enclosed mechanical clutch and brake which is foot-pedal oper-
ated. The clutch can be slipped and the hand wheel used to rotate the
winding shaft.
• All models are supplied with an auto-stop facility comprising of a five
figure pre-determining electronic counter and electronic brake.

VPI is a well proven process and systems are supplied for all sectors of the electrical
and electronic industries.

WHITELEGG supplied systems are well known for:

the needs of electrical designers and new insulation materials. Random wound
low voltage machines may impregnate successfully with vacuum only tech-
niques, but for form wound and higher volt-
age machines a pressure cycle is essential.

requires.
• Assimilation of new technologies. Design
and manufacture takes full advantage of the
latest in insulation materials and impreg-
nants. For example the design of railway
traction motors continues to be aimed at
greater output combined with a reduction in
size and weight and nowhere has the ad-
vent of new materials been more evident.
• Diversity. From the Compact series with work chamber diameters from 300
mm diameter to plants for high voltage machines with work chambers in excess
of 5 meters diameter. Larger plants may be vertical or horizontal . Whitelegg
range includes plant for processing solid type paper insulated power cables,
oil or gas filled cables, paper insulated and co-axial type telecom cables and
for pre-drying and pre-impregnation of cable papers.
• Control Systems. All plant is available with fully automated process control

VT- Motorised Varnish Tank

• Suitable for use with a wide range of pro-
priety varnishes including trickle and wa-
ter based types.
• The job is lowered into the top tank, the
lid closed and the varnish pumped from
the lower tank. After the soak time has
elapsed, the varnish is then pumped
back and the job removed.

For Distribution and Power transformers when the active part of the
transformer need to be efficiently dried irrespective of whether they are to

be liquid immersed or encapsulated in a resin system.
Vacuum Drying has the following advantages over conventional drying in
a heat only in atmospheric air circulated ovens.
• Time savings. Dramatically reduces processing times compared to
conventional techniques. Heating of the active is essential but time
consuming.
• Dual process. Hot air is circulated for
heating of the active parts followed by
vacuum for final air extraction of air,
moisture and any other volatiles.
• For Distribution Transformers the use
of low frequency power for direct
heating of the conductors has been
an important development.
• For Power Transformers the use of
Vapour Phase Heating is the fastest and most efficient method.
• After drying the active parts and placing them in their tank it is rec-
ommended that they are oil filled under vacuum. This may be done
by returning the tank to the same vacuum chamber in which the
parts have been dried.
• Energy Saving. When drying railway traction motors energy sav-
ings can be as high as 75% with drying times as short as 1 hour

This unit has been appositively designed to be connected to


our welding and brazing machines for commutators.

The Chiller Unit is composed of a pump-radiator and a


Cooling Unit that maintains and controls the water-
output temperature independently from the environ-

RT1 Rotor Tester
• Testing the quality of squirrel cage rotors bars.

The Explorer II includes Motor Master + software, which transforms the instrument into a technically
comprehensive P/PM tool for energy audits. Developed in conjunction with the US Department of en-
ergy via their Motor Challenge Program, the Explorer II has helped industry to increase the use of en-
ergy efficient motor-driven systems. Access to a huge database of motor types ensures that reliable in-
formation in comprehensive motor testing.

Advanced Data Collection


Once testing is completed, results can be saved and stored for each individual motor. This type of
documentation is critical for any predictive maintenance program. It allows the recalling of previous in-
formation for true analysis of trends. Test results are collected, stored, recalled, and managed using
standard MS Access relational database file formats. Reports can be generated quickly and easily
through the main print console, allowing operators visual confirmation of motor integrity information.
Data can be collected and organised to suit communication in-house or with clients.

The Explorer II utilizes multiple tests to determine the power condition, health, load and energy pro-
file of your motor using the following six test domains:

POWER CONDITION TEST DOMAIN


Voltage Level. This test identifies over and under voltage conditions and compares the measured volt-
age levels with user defined thresholds. Voltage Unbalance. Examines the single phase voltages in the
motor by calculating its percentage unbalance via NEMA derating and assesses the voltage unbalance
level compared with the stored threshold. Distortion. Assesses the level of Total Harmonic Distortion of
the three single phases to neutral voltages and compares this to the stored thresholds.
MOTOR PERFORMANCE TEST DOMAIN
Effective Service Factor. This test divides the estimated percentage load into the NEMA derating factor
and identifies the thermal overloading in the motor. Overcurrent. Inspects the single-phase current by
comparing it with the nameplate data for your stator current.
MOTOR CONDITION TEST DOMAIN
Rotor Bar. Inspects the relative amplitude of the rotor-bar sideband and assesses the rotor cage signa-
ture in relation to stored thresholds. Operating Point. Compares the torque, frequency and average sta-
tor current values and alerts you to ant deviating values.
LOAD DOMAIN
Torque ripple. Identifies the ripple that the load is requesting, resulting in a percent of a ripple to steady
state. Load History. For motors that operate at constant loads, the load history test warns you if any
changes occur in the operating load, comparing actual to previous measurements.
ENERGY ASSESSMENT DOMAIN
Efficiency. Examines current operating conditions and compares them to similar motors, identifies po-
tential money savings and aids in the decision of motor replacement. Payback Period. Searches within
the motor master database for comparable motors and calculates the time period in which a high effi-
ciency replacement would take to pay for itself.
AUXILIARY DOMAIN (OPTIONAL)
Haystack. Displays the domain of vibration against frequency and investigates whether any frequency
component of the vibration spectrum trespasses the preset thresholds. Operating Conditions. Learns
the vibration signature of a motor load system and warns you of change in the operating signature.

DIGITAL WINDING TESTERS DR Series

The resistance test verifies the existence of dead shorts within the turn to turn coils. Shows
any imbalances between phases along with locating poor wire connections or contacts.
DC Hipot testing detects faults in ground wall/earth insulation and also provides a complete
Polarization Index test. The ground wall/earth system consists of the wire insulation, slot
liner insulation, wedges, varnish and sometimes phase paper.
Surge testing detects faults in both inter-turn winding and phase-to-phase insulation sys-
tems.
The ‘D’ series can be used to test all the rotating fields of a synchronous motor by storing
the waveform from a surge test on one coil and comparing that waveform to a waveform
from every other coil. This winding analyser can also be used on DC armatures and fields.

AT101 High-Current Surge Test Adaptor

The AT-101 was designed to successfully test DC motors, form coils and
other low impedence windings. Traction motor and generator manufacturing
and repair facilities all benefit greatly from the AT101

The lower impedence of series-wound armatures makes it difficult to surge


test coil-to-coil. A higher surge test current is required to test the necessary
bar-to bar voltage differences. To gain the required higher current, standard
surge comparison testers use excessive voltage which may harm your wind-
ings.

The AT101 features a foot switch and hand-held contactor with safety
grounds to apply surges directly to the commutator. Measuring the surge
voltage wave at the commutator via a separate shielded cable eliminates er-

rors in reading test voltages. The test waveform is displayed simultaneously MAINTE-

on the CR. When testing, the waveform should be the same comparing adja-
cent bars. A bar circuit short will be indicated by a lower amplitude waveform.

Bar-to-bat testing has many advantages over Span testing. To generate a minimum
350 volt bar-to bar reading with a 10 span test, the potential to ground at the first coil
is 3500 volts. The higher voltage may break down the insulation at the first coil and
fail at testing the coils turn-to-turn.

The AT101 provides I high instantaneous surge test current, and shifts the wave-
form ring frequency to a more observable rate. This method eliminates the draw-
backs that equalizer windings can create during armature testing.

The Power of Automation
The AWA Series III computer performs all tests, stores the results, and continuously monitors voltage whilst
testing. If the computer detects a weakness in the insulation, the test in interrupted, the operator is alerted, and
all of the test parameters at the time of the interruption are reported. This happens automatically and immedi-
ately, so it’s no longer necessary for the operator to monitor the progress of the test, check voltage stress lev-
els, and watch for signs of a fault. The AWA Series III performs these operations in microseconds and with a
higher degree of precision and safety than can be achieved manually. With optional automatic or manual testing
the AWA features easy to understand dialog boxes and simple Windows® NT point and click operation to make
testing easy and simple.
Pre-Programmed Operation
With the AWA Series III you can pre-build work orders defining which motors to test, the order of execution, and
parameters for each test including voltages, duration, and pass/fail limits. Technicians can then conduct tests in
the field by simply connecting the instruments to the motor and running the pre-tests. You can be sure that
there will be no faulty settings, incorrect tests, or straying voltage levels. Results are stored in the memory.
Advanced Data Collection
Once testing is completed, results can be saved and stored for each individual motor. This type of documenta-
tion is critical for any predictive maintenance program. It allows the recalling of previous information for true
analysis of trends. Test results are collected, stored, recalled, and managed using standard MS Access rela-
tional database file formats. Reports can be generated quickly and easily for predictive maintenance trending,
insurance records, or guarantee and warranty requirements for customers. Data can be collected and organised
to suit communication in-house or with clients. Standard Access® files also provide easy transfer of test results
to maintenance management software programs or other database tools and Access® is ODBC compliant.
Turn-to-Turn Testing
The AWA Series III incorporates the most advanced inter-turn test capability ever offered in a field portable in-
strument. Computer control and waveform monitoring are dramatic enhancements of manually controlled test
machines.
As with DC Hipot testing, the AWA Series III begins surge generation at low voltage. Each pulse applied to the
winding is digitised and the resultant waveform is compared to previous waveforms to detect any sign of turn-to-
turn shorting. Comparison is done by the patented Error Area Ratio Technique. This methods is sensitive to
less than 1% variance between coils. In addition, shorts among windings in parallel can be located, something
never before possible when comparing waveforms visually.
Fewer pulses are applied to the winding, reducing the power required to perform the surge test. Since each and
every pulse is analysed, it becomes the new reference waveform as test voltage is increased.
If no turn-to-turn shorting is detected, the final pulse waveform is stored as reference for all subsequent tests.

GP 82 Portable Balancing Unit

Balancing
Incorrect balancing in rotating machines is the main cause of vi-
bration and subsequent failure. It also leads to noise, operator
strain and fatigue. The answer is to carry out field balancing. This
corrects the problem accurately without dismantling and with little
or no downtime. Balancing using the Vector Program (optional)
allows the correct weights and their location to be accurately cal-
culated and applied. A full print out of the balance process can
then be produced with the appropriate printer and data stored.
Frequency Analysis
In addition to incorrect balance, there are various other causes of
vibration e.g. bad gear meshing or teeth missing, misalignment,

MCT 2 Motor Core Tester


Low power tester for stator lamination faults

Test Equipment
Stator cores are normally tested by heating them with high levels of flux and checking
for hotspots. This is time consuming, labour intensive and could cause motor core
damage.
The new MCT2 detects stator lamination faults in motors at a low level of electrical
flux, typically 4% of normal operating flux. A sense head coil detects any circulating
fault currents caused by imperfections in the core which are displayed on a meter on
the front panel.
This non-destructive test can be used to detect a fault and check the effectiveness of
a repair. Ideally suited for motor manufacture and repair

Technical Description
The MCT2 uses a Chattock potentiometer which measures excitation current by re-
sponding to the magnetic field set up by the current. To test the stator, the field be-
tween adjacent pairs of teeth is scanned by the coil, whose output is measured and
displayed on a meter.
Along un undamaged pair of teeth, the output from the coil will be virtually constant
and of known relative phase. It can thus be nulled out to give a zero meter reading.
However, in a damaged part of the stator, the excitation flux will induce abnormal cir-
culating currents, producing new out-of-phase fields. As the coil passes the damaged CORE

ACCURATE LOAD TESTING OF NEW AND REBUILT MOTORS

The development of the EC-5200 series gives load testing capabilities


with the versatility of high torque at low RPM.
The power being produced by the prime mover is absorbed by an air-
cooled eddy current brake having an inverse construction. This inverse
construction allows for an electromagnet with a smaller diameter than
the working air gap. This advantage produces higher torque per size.
Torque reaction is measured via a load cell on a one to one base. By re-
versing the load cell the dynamometer becomes bi-directional allowing
testing in either direction.
Machine is supplied with SK Taper motor couplings and torque is trans-
ferred via a T.B. Woods Sure Flex coupling.
Standard readout via an exclusive four function 2000 series digital unit
including torque, RPM, Horsepower, percent of torque rise or percent of
torque load.
Cooling is via two blower fans, one internal in the brake, and one exter-

Designed to quickly and accurately test winding resistances of highly inductive


transformers. Since the Accu-Trans accurately measures resistance ranging
from 1 micro-ohm to 200 ohms, it van also be used to measure EHV circuit

IRM-5000 Megohmmeter
A Reliable, Microprocessor Based Insulation Resistance Meter

Test Equipment
The IRM-5000 Megohmmeter is a micro-processor based, high voltage, insulation
test meter. This sophisticated insulation tester uses dual micro-processor design
with one processor dedicated to control of the power supply and measuring, and
the other processor dedicated to display, printer control and user interfaces.
Insulation resistance is tested by applying a known voltage and measuring the re-
sultant leakage current. The measured resistance is displayed on a backlit LCD
display.
Test reports, in both tabulated and graphic form are printed by a built in thermal
printer. Up to 100 reports can be stored in the memory.

Test Voltage. The IRM-500 can run tests with preset voltages (500, 1000, 2500 and 5000 VDC) or
can be run with user-selectable voltages from 50-5000 V with a +/- 2 V resolution.
Insulation Resistance Test. Test voltage and test duration (1-90 min) may be set. Resistance
readings will be collected throughout the selected test period. Resistance value, test voltage, leak-
age current and capacitance values are displayed on the screen. Results can be printed.
Polarization Index (PI) Test. PI tests can be run at preset or specific test voltages.
Step Voltage (SV) Test. Allows the user to test insulation resistance in five equal voltage steps,
stepping up the voltage at pre-determined time intervals.
Dielectric Discharge (DD) Test. Measures dielectric absorption of an insulator. This test can be

used to diagnose a problem in the case of multi-layered insulation.
Capacitor Discharge. Automatic discharge of any test voltage left on the test material after each
test. An audible alarm and message on the display warns the operator.
Capacitance Display. Automatic measurement of the capacitance of the device under test. Range
form 0.01-10.0 µF
Volt meter. The IRM-5000 can measure voltages from 50-1250 V , ac or dc.

For Load Testing: DC loading generator coupled to a fabricated base plate with adjustable ex-
tension bed for mounting the motors under test. Generator absorbs 150 hp at 4-pole, 6-pole and 8-
pole speeds. Generator provided with a range of couplings to suit various motor sizes. For absorp-
tion of the generator output there is a 3-phase 6 pulse thyristor control system to feed back the in-
coming 3-phase 50 KW mains supply. Equipment includes high speed fuse protection, overload
protection, field failure protection, control fuses etc.

DS230 High Voltage Surge/High Potential Tester

The DS-230 is a high power impulse gen-
erator. It is used to test very large voltage
windings. The output is controlled by a
variable transformer from 500 to 30,000
Volts.

The unit performs both surge and DC Hi-


Pot tests. It incorporates a supply monitor
to ensure safe operation from a well
grounded supply. In addition 80 kV rated
test cable is provided.

The key element of the surge test circuit


is a grounded grid hydrogen thryraton
tube. The tube conducts very high peak
current (rated up to 20,000 amps).

Such high instantaneous currents are


needed to fully test the very low imped-
ance windings of very large motors or
form wound coils. The current is only pro-
duce for a few micro seconds by the dis-
charge of a 0.1 microfarad capacitor

GP 82 Portable Balancing Unit

Balancing
Incorrect balancing in rotating machines is the main cause of vi-
bration and subsequent failure. It also leads to noise, operator
strain and fatigue. The answer is to carry out field balancing. This
corrects the problem accurately without dismantling and with little
or no downtime. Balancing using the Vector Program (optional)
allows the correct weights and their location to be accurately cal-
culated and applied. A full print out of the balance process can
then be produced with the appropriate printer and data stored.
Frequency Analysis
In addition to incorrect balance, there are various other causes of
vibration e.g. bad gear meshing or teeth missing, misalignment,
belt tension or bearing problems. The GP 82 has an Analyse
