B.Traditional or Progressive: What is your view of curriculum?
1. What is your own definition of a curriculum?
The curriculum is a course of study that allows the student to gain specific knowledge and skills in the
things that the teacher will teach.
2. Do you have a traditional view of a curriculum, a progressive view or both? Explain your
view based on your definition.
My views of curriculum change with the age and attainment of students. I’ll leave it to my readers to
decide if my view is “traditional” or “progressive.”
For elementary, middle, and high school, I favor a liberal education (liberal in the breadth of study and NOT
political ideology), which is focused on teachers provoking students’ curiosity and providing them the
resources to explore what they are curious about. I firmly believe “teaching” is of little value unless and until
the student has their own curiosity in what is being taught. Thus, a large part of this early education requires
that teachers be something of entertainers, as they provoke students to explore new vistas and subjects.
For college bachelor curricula, I favor a liberal education, which also serves students’ desires to focus on
some professional specialty. I believe many colleges do a good job of combining these two general foci.
For post graduate work, the curriculum becomes progressively more specialized and more focused on ever
more narrow fields of interest. That is as it should be.
