ABSTRACT
THE IMPACT OF ONLINE GAMES IN ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF THE STUDENTS IN
KANANGA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL.

This study was conducted to assess and find out the impact of on-line gaming on the
academic performance and social behavior of the students in the Polytechnic University of the
Philippines-Laboratory High School. Furthermore, this study sought answers on the significant
relationship between playing on-line games and academic performance and to social
behavior of the students.
The study revealed that boys are more of a player compared to girls who often play games
that require three or more players like League of Legends, Clash of Clans, Crossfire and
many more to mention. It is also stated that those who play online games are around 14-15
years old who are believed to be in the Grade 8 level. These students who often play games
have an average weekly allowance of 101 pesos to 500 pesos. Playing online games do not
affect their grades badly for they know how to limit themselves. They know that they need to
control themselves in order to function well in their class that is why they only play games
during vacation and weekends with a lot of time compared when they have classes.
Even though they play online games; they know how to socialize well and they can perform
very well when it comes to academic performance. However, it is inevitable not to play even
for half an hour especially when they are accustomed to it. Therefore, it is just a matter of
discipline.

ABSTRACT

The effects of using Social Media among the students of Kananga National High
School

The study sought to assess students’ use of social media and its effect on
academic performance of tertiary institutions students in Ghana with a focus
on Koforidua Polytechnic students. Questionnaire was used for collecting
data. Out of one thousand five hundred and seventy-eight copies of the
questionnaire distributed, one thousand five hundred and eight were retrieved
which represented a response rate of 95.5 %. The study revealed that
majority of the respondents had mobile phones which also had Internet facility
on them and had knowledge of the existence of many media sites. The study
further confirmed that most of the respondents visit their social media sites
using their phones and spend between thirty minutes to three hours per day.
In addition the study revealed that the use of social media sites had affected
academic performance of the respondents negatively and that there was
direct relationship between the use of social media sites and academic
performance. The study recommends among others that, students with mobile
phones having internet facility should be encouraged to use it to supplement
their research in the library rather than the usual charting with friends all the
time. Students should be encouraged to limit the time they spend on their
social media sites per day and advise them to rather substitute those hours to
read novels to improve their knowledge. Since the use of social media sites
had affected the academic work of students negatively there is the urgent
need for the introduction of students to the availability of novels and other
information resources or materials that can help them academically.

Statement of the Problem

The rapid advancement of media technology has had a great impact on the way people
communicate on a daily basis. The growing dimension of the use of the social media among
the youth of today cannot be over emphasized. Over the years, social networking among
students has become more and more popular. It is a way to make connections, not only on
campus but with friends outside of school. Social networking is a way that helps people feel
they belong to a community. Due to the increased popularly of it, economists and professors
are questioning whether grades of students will not be affected by how much time is spent on
these sites. Choney, (2010), MehMood & Taswir, (2013), Kist (2008), Jacobsen & Forste,
(2011), believe that the use of technology such as internet is one of the most important factors
that can influence educational performance of students positively or adversely. Many parents
and guardians are worried that students are spending too much time on facebook and other
social media sites and have not enough time to study. Though parents are worried about
students’ constant use of the social media sites, many students continue to utilize these sites
on a daily basis. It is against this background that this research is being conducted to
ascertain the impact of students’ use of social media sites on their academic work.

Research Questions
i. Does the use of social media sites have any impact on student’s academic performance?
ii. What are the benefits they derive from using social media?
iii. Why do student visit their social media sites?

Objectives of the Study

The general objective of the study was to find out the impact of social media on academic
performance among students. The specific objectives of the study were as follows:
i. To examine the impact of social media on academic performance among the students.
ii. To identify the benefits obtained from using the social media.
iii. To ascertain what students use social media sites for

Personal Reflection
Various studies show that playing too much computer games causes physical
damages and increases anxiety and depression in players. Many studies
show that most adolescents who are addicted to computer games have high
heart beat and blood pressure due to too much excitement and stress.

Pursuing STEM Careers: Perspectives of Senior High School

Students

This qualitative descriptive research explored the perspectives of STEM

(science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) senior high school

students in a public secondary school in Kananga national high chool

Philippines on their reasons why they enrolled in STEM and their intent to

pursue relevant career. A total of 20 Grade 12 students were purposively

selected as participants of the research. The participants were interviewed

using a validated structured interview guide. The recorded interviews were

individually transcribed to arrive at an extended text. The extended texts were

reviewed to generate themes and significant statements. The paper found out

that senior high school students are generally interested in the field related to

biology. The alignment to the preferred course in college is the primary reason

of the participants for enrolling in STEM. Almost all the students wanted to

pursue STEM-related careers after their university graduation. Further,

personal aspiration is the main reason for the participants to pursue STEM-

related professions. The study recommends that senior high schools may

design various activities during the career week. These activities may include
possible career paths in STEM-related courses, students' career and

motivation, and their career aptitude. Teachers may also infuse innovative

pedagogies for better STEM instruction. For the students to have more

interest in science, it is recommended that STEM teachers undergo retooling

or pursue advanced studies. Senior high schools may conduct career

guidance seminars for the students to guide them on what strands they

should take. The Department of Education (DepEd) may support the

implementation of different programs regarding students’ career preparation.

This program will help the students to be more aware on what career path

they wanted to pursue, and to avoid pressures from peers. Schools may

advocate a collaborative, authentic and goal-oriented learning environment

with respect to the demand of Industrial Revolution 4.0.

Statement of the problem

This study aimed to explore the perspective of STEM senior high school students in
pursuing science-related careers in the future. Generally, this study answered the
following
research questions:

Research Questions
1) What is the interest of the students in the STEM field?
2) Why do STEM students enroll under the STEM strand?
3) What career will the STEM students pursue after graduation?
4) Why do students pursue (or not pursue) a STEM-related career?

Significance of the study

This research provides a foundation for understanding how and why

integrated STEM experiences can support improvement in learning and

thinking, where they might pose difficulties for learners, and how they can be

designed to be more effective

ones. The study also concluded that school bullying affect student’s academic achievement either
victims or the bullies

Statement of Problem
Bullying is a problem that affects all students, either the person the bully, the victims, and those
who witnesses. Bullying may include verbal, physical assaults, threats, jokes or language, mockery
and criticizing, insulting behavior and facial expressions. All of such factors work either
individually, or collectively, for contributing in students’ likelihood of bullying.
It is well known that bullying is difficult to eliminate or to stop it in schools because it is used by
students. Bullying at school has various impact, among such impact is the academic achievement.
Therefore the research problem is to determine the impact of school bullying on students’
academic achievement from teachers point of view.

Research Questions
1.During this academic session how many times have you been bullied?
2. Can you tell us how were you bullied?

Significance of the study

The research importance stems from the importance of the topic it deals with, which is
considered very important for many parties. Moreover it will enable those concerned know how
to dea

Personal Reflection
My personal reflection is that bullying is never acceptable whether it’s verbal, cyber or
physical, bullying can change a person’s life in many ways. Some people may take a positive
route and speak up about their problems and struggles from being bullied. They may even
seek professional help to cope and deal with recovery. Others, who choose to do nothing,
don’t reach out for help which is linked to many negative outcomes including impacts on
mental health, substance use,
and suicide. I believe more anti-bullying laws should be passed to stop and punish these
bullies

Abstract
A literature review of research pertaining to cyberbullying was completed. Findings indicate that
cyberbullying is becoming more prevalent as students spend an increasing amount oftime using
technology that keeps them connected to people at all hours ofthe day. There are many different
ways in which cyberbullies reach their victims, including instant messaging over the Internet,
social networking web sites, text messaging and phone calls to cell phones. There are different
forms ofcyberbullying including, but not limited to, harassment, impersonation, and
cyberstalking. It has been found that there are differences between not only the prevalence o f
cyberbullying between males and females but also the ways in which males and females
cyberbully. Like bullying, cyberbullying is a serious problem which can cause the victim to feel
inadequate and overly self-conscious, along with the possibility of committing suicide due to
being cyberbullied. Two such cases are included in this paper. There are numerous ways in which
schools and parents can prevent cyberbullying and ways in which they can intervene if it has
occurred.

Title

Statement ofthe Problem

Cyberbullying is a new form of bullying that follows students from the hallways oftheir schools to
the privacy oftheir homes. Many victims ofcyberbullying are bullied from the moment they wake
up and check their cell phone or e-mail, to the time they go to bed and shut off their computer or
cell phone.

Research Questions
This study addressed three research questions.
1. What is the prevalence o f cyberbullying and what are the different forms o f
cyberbullying?
2. What are the differences between males and females when it comes to
cyberbullying?
3. What are some prevention and intervention techniques for cyberbullying?

Significant of the study

The purpose o f this comprehensive literature review is to further understand cyberbullying

which continues to occur more frequently as technology becomes more readily accessible by the
masses, especially students; and to explore ways o f preventing cyberbullying before it happens,
and intervening after it has occurred.

Personal reflection
During my research and studies, I have extended my knowledge on cyberbullying and how
serious this social justice issue actually is. I have realised the shocking extent to which victims
of cyberbullying have gone though and reading the many stories about the real life examples,
have made me think twice about what I say about people online, and to think about the
consequences which I may face if that person found out. I know for a fact that I have been
cyberbullied before and it tore my life apart, as well as the relationships between me and my
family and friends.
