ARLINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT
INFORMATIONAL MEMO
TO: CRAIG BUTLER S, SERGEANT
FROM: ABRAHAM FELTON #2845, OFFICER
REF: NORTH GEOGRAPHIC CID DETECTIVE
DATE: JULY 17, 2020
I, Officer A. Felton #2845, am writing this memo to express my interest in becoming a
North Geographic Criminal Investigations Detective with the Arlington Police
Department.
Prior to starting my career as an Arlington Police Officer, I worked as a Juvenile
Detention Officer at Swanson Center for Youth in Monroe LA for two years. I supervised
juveniles from ages 10 to 21 years of age. I prepared and maintained detailed reports on
each student given counseling and helped implement group and individual treatment
programs. I worked with a team and other agencies to help place youth in the most
appropriate treatment programs. This position taught me how to work in a unified
structure and how to value teamwork in a high stress environment. I learned the
importance of report writing and how to prepare documentation for proper presentation. I
believe the experiences and skills that I gained in my prior profession would serve as an
asset to me if I am selected to work as a detective.
I joined the Arlington Police Department on June 10,2013. Since joining the department,
I have spent much of my career working within the North district as a patrol officer.
During that time, I have been able to build very strong relationships with community
stakeholders, such as local business owners/managers, and with citizens. Further, I am
very familiar with many of the repeat offenders within the north district. I believe the
positive working relationships that I have developed as a patrol officer with those who have
a vested interest in this community, and my knowledge of known suspects would positively
serve me as a north district geographical detective. My interest in becoming a Geographic
CID Detective began in 2015. On one day in particular, I was dispatched to a local store for a
theft report. Upon arrival on scene, I encountered a complainant was only able to provide
limited suspect information. The store had video surveillance cameras, and I was able to
observe the footage, and use it to obtain a physical description of the suspect. Based on the
description obtained, I was able to locate and arrest the suspect very shortly after the
offense occurred. During the aforementioned investigation, I was able to successfully
conduct a field investigation beyond just taking a field theft report; this left a lasting
impression on me. At that moment I knew that becoming a geographic detective was a career
path within the Arlington Police Department that I was interested in pursuing.
In order to become more knowledgeable about the position of Geographic CID Detective,
and in order to make myself a more qualified applicant for a future investigative position, I
inquired with multiple detectives throughout the department about their investigative units; I
also asked to participate in some of their investigations. Asa result, I have been
