left for market. When she came back home, her car was fully loaded with lots of stuff ranging
from minor to major things, such as water bottles, juices, canned food, piles of tissue roles. She
also bought cartons of hand sanitizers, disinfectant fluids, surgical gloves and masks as well.
She was constantly getting updates from TV channels and various social media sites and was
feeling tired and completely helpless. She continuously instructing her family members to stock
more things. Apart from family members, she also repeatedly contacted her friends and
neighbors to do the same, as she thought that they do not get anything from market for a long
period of time.

ii. What was the cause(s) of problem of Laila? (1)
iii. Is there anything Laila have done to handle this situation better? (1)
iv. If you were at Laila's place, how would you handle this situation? (1)
v. What do you suggest Laila to effectively deal with the situation? (4)

Answer:

i, In the passage stated above Laila is clearly going through Distress and due to which she is panicking.

ii, the main reason she fell into distress was that she was overwhelmed and felt like she hasn’t done enough or is
behind on her responsibilities. She feels threatened by the prevailing situation and stresses about the fact that she
doesn’t have enough resources to tackle the situation effectively. It is also said that she is afraid of the fact that they
have no idea when it will all be over meaning that she sees no hope, in turn adding to her distress.

iii, As Laila heard the news of Lockdown she genuinely started panicking as it is mentioned she started getting short
of breath and sweating and that her heart started racing. She was completely occupied by her physiological needs.
Instead, what she should’ve done was analyze the situation and take a moment to think and understand the situation
so she can make rational decisions.

iv, If I were caught up in a situation like this I first would’ve checked what I needed and made list of things I would
need. I also would’ve talked to my family first and discussed the situation with them as planning together could
prove to be more effective.

v, In order for Laila to effectively tackle this situation it is important that she learns to relax and take a moment to
think instead of panicking. She must slow down so she can analyze the situation rationally and in a better manner as
rushing things can often lead to bad decisions. She must Think first and practice what’s called a STOPP theory.
STOPP basically stands for Stop, take a breath, observe, put in perspective and practice what works. This basically
means that when you get caught up in a situation like this one must first stop and breath in order to be more rational.
Then one must observe the situation, find problems that they must tackle. Then they must develop a prospective of
things and later follow that action plan. By following these few simple steps we can ensure that we don’t fall in
distress and make better decisions.

Q2. Write a brief summary of the project of “Personal Development” you did in Spring 2020.
Your answer should be comprised of a) Project Significance; b) Project Description; c) Self-
discovery; d) Progress; e) Outcome; f) Obstacles; g) Lesson learned. [Word Limit: 250-
300; Marks 07]

Q3. Choose and report any conflicting situation you went through in your life (either personal or
professional) and discuss;
a) Causes of conflict. (1)
b) What course of action did you choose to deal with that situation? (1)
c) Identify your conflict management style on the basis of your knowledge of conflict resolution
discussed in class. (1)
d) How could you deal with the situation more effectively, discuss at least 4 tips? (2)
[Word Limit: 150-200; Marks 05]
a, My conflict was external and personal in nature. In the years that I’ve lived my conflict
was always with my parents usually due to difference in perspective.
b, In order to handle this situation in a better way we started talking it through to bridge
the communication gap we had. We also started spending more time with each other and
take both perspectives into spectrum.
c, The conflict management style I followed was usually compromising as we each had to
give up something that was our ego and listen to the other party. Sometimes a person has to
either accommodate or collaborate when something bigger than ego is at stake.
d, In order to deal with the situation effectively we must keep a few things in perspective.
Firstly, we should ensure that there is no blame game going on. Blaming each other is
always a bad idea as it triggers ego and only makes the relationship worse getting one
further away from solution. Secondly, we should make sure that we communicate and
convey our problem because silent treatment often leads to misunderstandings. Thirdly, we
must always find a common ground meaning that instead of looking at 2 different stories
from each party and agreeing upon one, we must instead look at the third story and resolve
the issue. Lastly, we must listen to others perspectives without driving a conclusion, use of
“and” instead of “but”. This signifies that using ‘and’ means you are listening to them and
also giving your point of view.
