CREATE NEW TOOL CREATING A LATHE TOOL LIBRARY
CREATE NEW TOOL
Objectives:
To create a rough turn tool with an 80 deg. insert.
NOTE: To display the Toolpaths Manager press Alt + O.
MACHINE
Select the Default.
Select the plus sign in front of Properties in the Toolpaths Manager to expand the Toolpaths Group Properties.
Left click on Files to open the Machine Group Properties dialog box.
Select the Tool icon in the Tool Library area.
Right click in the Part display area.
Select Create new tool.
Select the General Turning type in the tool Type page.

Select the Get Insert button in the Inserts page.
Select the "CNMG-321" insert.
Select the OK button to exit the General Turning / Boring Inserts dialog box.
The inserts parameters are as shown in the following picture.
Select the Holders tab and click on the Get Holder button.
Select the "NVLCR-163D" holder.
Select the OK button to exit the General Turning Holders dialog box.
The holder’s parameters are shown below.
Select Setup Tool.
Make the changes as shown and click OK to return back to the Define Tool dialog box.
NOTE: Setup Tool will establish the mounting position, tool angle, spindle rotation, turret, active spindle and
home position.
Select Draw Tool to view the rough turn tool.
A preview of the tool will be shown in the graphics user interface. Press Enter to return to the Define Tool
dialog box.
Select the Parameters tab and enter the Tool name as shown.
Select the Tool Clearance button as outlined above.
Select the Scan Tool Geometry button.
NOTE: Tool Clearance will allow you to view and edit the tool’s end and side clearance angles as well as the
tool’s width and height.
Click on the Select All button.
Select the OK button to exit.
The Lathe Tool Clearance page will look as shown.
Select the OK button to exit.
Select the Save to Library button to save the new tool in the library.
NOTE: Make sure that you save the tool to your own library to separate it from Mastercam’s Library. When
prompted, save it with your library name.
Select the OK button twice to exit the Lathe Tool Manager.
Exercises:
Create a finish turn tool with a 35 Deg. Insert.
Create a boring bar with a 55 Deg. Insert.

✓To edit an existing grooving tool, "OD GROOVING W0.375 CENTER", and change it
to an "OD Cutoff RH".

To edit an existing grooving tool, "OD GROOVING W0.375 CENTER", and change it to an "OD Cutoff RH".
MACHINE
From the Machine Type group, select the drop down arrow below Lathe.
Select the Default.
Select the plus sign in front of Properties in the Toolpaths Manager to expand the Toolpaths Group Properties.
Left click on Files to open the Machine Group Properties dialog box.
Select the Tool icon in the Tool Library area.
Find the R0.01 W0.375 GROOVE CENTER WIDE tool in the library list and right click on the tool.
Select Edit tool.

Set the parameters of the insert as shown.
Select the Holders tab and make any changes as shown.
Select the Draw Tool button as outlined above.
A preview of the tool will be shown in the graphics user interface as shown.
Press Enter to return to the Define Tool dialog box.
Select the Parameters tab and change the parameters of the grooving tool as shown.
Select the Save to Library button to save the new tool in the library.
NOTE: Make sure that you save the tool to your own library to separate it from Mastercam’s Library. When

Select the OK button twice to exit the Tool Manager dialog box.
Select the OK button to exit the Machine Group Properties dialog box.
