Function

of Nouns
Subject
-most common function of
noun.
- Noun perform the action or
is used with a be verb.
EXAMPLE
-May is both my sister and
best friend.
- The Children enjoy listening
to music.
SUBJECT
COMPLEMENT
_ Noun is equal to or renames the
subject.
_ Follows linking verbs such as
be, seem like, look like, or become.
EXAMPLE
_ May is my best friend.
- It is a fun activity.
Direct Address
- Noun is used to communicate a message
directly to another person or group.
-Person addressed may be identied by
name or nickname.
- Name of the person addressed is set off
by a comma or a pair of comma.
APPOSITIVE
- Renames the noun right
beside it.
- Can be a short or long
combination of words.
- Also set off by commas.
EXAMPLE
May, my best friend, likes to
listen to music.
We once watched a concert of
our favorite band, The Rockers.
DIRECT OBJECT
- Act as reciever of the
action.
- Follows an action verb.
EXAMPLE

- I heard music when I first


met my best friend..
- We like each other because
we share same ineterests.
INDIRECT OBJECT
- Answer the question "to or for
whom" or "to or for what" the
action word is.
- Follow the action verb and
does not come with the words
"to" or "for"
EXAMPLE
- I gave May a journal as a birthday gift.
- She usually gives our friends pieces
of advice.
OBJECT OF THE
PREPOSITION
- Follows a preposition.
Example
-The students wrote their essay on
a paper for their English class.
- They did it with passion.
