MARCUS DOUHIT AND JIMMY ALAPAG ON THEIR FINAL ROAD
As the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup ended, Gilas Pilipinas are now heading up for
the 2014 Incheon Asian Games as they quest for their gold medal in half century.
But the most important thing for its two players who will play for the last time before
hanging up their respective jerseys.
Naturalized player Marcus Douthit joined in 2011 and made a major role on bringing the
Philippine team back to its glory most especially during 2013 FIBA Asia Championships
after winning against Korea in the semifinals and get qualified after almost four decades
of its absence,
But due to his injuries suffered in the past months of preparations for the World Cup,
coach Vincent "Chot" Reyes decided to replace him with newly-recruited and another
naturalized player Andray Blatche in the roster where the team finished 6th in the Group
B stage and 21st in overall ranking.
So, we may think that we could no longer see him in action anymore but things went
changed that given him another opportunity to play after Blatche's eligibility went denied
by the IAGOC due to lack of required three-year residency rule. That means, Marcus had
finally back and get into shape to face again with several Asian teams especially Iran,
China and Korea.
Meanwhile, the team captain Jimmy Alapag had already served the team for several
years. During the World Cup group stage, he made an impressive performance through
his outside shooting and speedy offense that even Western team opponents got
overwhelmed.
After their graceful exit with an overwhelming win against Senegal, he decided to leave
the team in order to give way for the young aspiring ones but his retirement from
international career went on hold due to some players who suffered injuries.
Gilas Pilipinas started their Asiad campaign last September 23rd as they played against
xxx followed by Iran
I wish all the best for them in their future and very thankful for the wonderful kind of
effort they did for the Philippines... always be remembered!
