Song Analysis – Introduction to the Philosophy
What were the songs all about?
How did you come up with your interpretations?
What do these songs all describe our topic for today?
Song 1: Mirrors
This song is all about two lovers who are now almost the same as each other because
their characteristics and learned lessons can be seen through each other. Whenever
they would stare at each other, they feel like they are staring with themselves, not
because of the physical aspects but the views, lessons, and aspirations that they both
share.
I come up with this interpretation because I’ll closely understand and analyze the
features of the song including its lyrics and tune. With the way the writer and the singer
wrote and sang the piece, I grasped the deep meaning behind this.
It has relation with our topic since it’s about mirrors. When we look in a mirror we are
analyzing how we look physically and sometimes emotionally. In Philosophy, we are
also looking at ourselves and analyze particular things just like how we look in a mirror.
Song 2: Girl in the mirror
This song is about finding realizations of who you are through the use of a mirror. You'll
eventually discover it's you after looking at a mirror all day. It's you in your true form.
I come up with this interpretation because the lyrics of the song are easy to grasp. The
words used were not that complex and I can also somewhat relate to them.
Just like the first song, this song has something to do with mirrors and Philosophy. In
Philosophy, one will study reality and how we will find answers to our unanswered
questions. We undergo a lot of experiences and analyses before we find the answer
about ourselves that we are seeking to find.
Song 3: Man in the Mirror
The song is about a person's unique identity and their interaction with society. It begins
with self and one person's inner battle into becoming a stronger, more virtuous, and
moral person.
What helps me formulate interpretations vis-à-vis the song, are the visual imagery and
personification that the writer used. The writer opens the first stanza by employing
visual images to create a winter atmosphere. Furthermore, the writer employs
personification by imbuing the wind with a similar to humans’ character via the use of
the term blowing, as well as serving as a picture to depict his psychological state by
informing the audience that the cold weather is impacting him mentally rather than
physically.
Both Philosophy and this song express the significance of looking at oneself first to
understand situations and conditions in life. Examining oneself is essential to have a
meaningful life just like what Socrates said.
Song 4: Reflection
The song's lyrics show one desire to reveal to the world who she truly is rather than
pretending to be someone she is not, but she is scared of disappointing her family if she
does so.
My previous knowledge about the movie ‘Mulan’ greatly helps me in figuring out the
meaning behind this song.
This has relation with our topic since its meaning elucidate how important self-identity
which is an important aspect of Philosophy. Just like Philosophy, this song illustrates
how we all need to look for our own identity inside ourselves.
