1.2 Routing and attachment of lines

♦ Mark lines prior to removal to prevent them from being inter‐
changed and to ensure that they are fitted in their original
positions. This applies for fuel, hydraulic and vacuum lines
as well as lines for activated charcoal filter system and
electrical wiring. Where necessary, make sketches or take
photographs.
♦ Any wiring fasteners which have been released during re‐
moval must be of the same type and must be attached at
the same locations when installing to prevent any rattling or
damage.

Removing
– Switch off all electrical consumers.
– Switch off ignition.
– Keep the ignition key outside the vehicle to prevent the igni‐
tion from being switched on unintentionally.
– Remove centre dash panel trim ⇒ General body repairs,
interior; Rep. gr. 70; Dash panel; Removing and installing
mounting frame for radio/navigation system.
– Insert radio release tools -T10057- into release slots -2- of
display unit for front information display and operating unit
control unit -J685- -1-.

• The pointed projections on the grip rings of radio release

tools -T10057- must point outwards.
– Release upper locking elements -2- by pressing them in di‐
rection of travel.
– Release lower locking elements -2- by pressing them in di‐
rection of travel.
– Remove display unit for front information display and operat‐
ing unit control unit -J685- -1-.
– Release and disconnect connectors.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

NOTICE
Danger of damage to components.
♦ When inserting display unit for control device of front dis‐
play and information control panel -J685- do not press on
the display and the control elements.

– Display unit for front information display and operating unit

control panel -J685- must engage audibly during installation.

If the control unit is replaced, select the Replace function of the

respective control unit in Guided fault finding ⇒ Vehicle
diagnostic tester.
Removing
– Switch off all electrical consumers.
– Switch off ignition.
– Keep the ignition key outside the vehicle to prevent the igni‐
tion from being switched on unintentionally.
– Open glove compartment.
– Eject any data carrier that is still in control unit 1 for informa‐
tion electronics -J794-.
– Insert 2 radio release tools -T10057- into slots in control
unit 1 for information electronics -J794- -1- until they en‐
gage.

The pointed projections on the grip rings point outwards.

– Take hold of grips on radio release tool -T10057- and pull

control unit 1 for information electronics -J794- -1- out of
dash panel.
– Release and unplug connectors at control unit 1 for informa‐
tion electronics -J794- -1-.
Equipment version with MOST bus
– Attach protective cap for cable-set connector -VAS 6223/9-
-1- by plugging it on the connector of MOST bus -2-.

All versions
– Press locking lugs on control unit 1 for information electron‐
ics -J794- and pull out radio release tool -T10057-.
Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:
– Slide control unit 1 for information electronics -J794- into
glove box until it engages.

1.4 Renewing rotary knobs of display unit

♦ Pliers -T40172C-

Note

The rotary knobs of the display unit for front information display
and operating unit control unit -J685- are renewed with the unit
installed.

Procedure

– Using pliers -T40172C- -item 2-, pull rotary knob -1- in a

straight line and in direction of -arrow- off mounting.
– Push new rotary knob in a straight line and in direction of
-arrow- onto mounting on display unit for front information
display and operating unit control unit -J685-.
• Make sure that the rotary knob is properly engaged in
mounting on display unit for front information display and
operating unit control unit -J685-.

Remove digital sound package control unit -J525-

– Move front seat to highest and rearmost position.
– Switch off all electrical consumers.
– Switch off ignition.
– Keep the ignition key outside the vehicle to prevent the igni‐
tion from being switched on unintentionally.
– Pull out spreader rivets -2-.

– Push cover -1- straight in direction of travel and remove it.

– Release and disconnect connector -2- on digital sound pack‐
age control unit -J525- -1-.

– Attach protective cap for cable-set connector -VAS 6223/9-

-1- by plugging it on the connector of MOST bus -2-.

– Release and disconnect connector -3- on digital sound pack‐

age control unit -J525- -1-.

– Unscrew bolts -5-.

– Swing digital sound package control unit -J525- -1- out of
retainer -4-.
Remove retainer for digital sound package control unit -J525-

– If necessary, fold back floor covering and floor insulation on

centre tunnel and on floor panel.
– Unscrew bolt -1- from middle tunnel and nuts -2- from retain‐
er.
– Remove retainer for digital sound package control unit -
J525- -3-.
Electrical connectors on digital sound package control unit -

Installing
Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

Note

♦ When installing, ensure that the digital sound package con‐

trol unit -J525- is seated correctly in the groove of the retain‐
er.
♦ When installing the cover, ensure that it is properly fitted on
the front edge of the retainer.

2.3 Removing and installing front treble

loudspeakers -R20-/-R22-
The front left treble loudspeaker -R20-/front right treble loud‐
speaker -R22- are located in the front door trims.

Note

Removal and installation are described for the left side. The
removal and installation procedure for the right-hand side is
basically the same.

Removing
– Switch off all electrical consumers.
– Switch off ignition.
– Keep the ignition key outside the vehicle to prevent the igni‐
tion from being switched on unintentionally.
– Remove trim panel together with interior door handle ⇒ Gen‐
eral body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 70; Front door trim pan‐
els; Removing and installing trim panel.
– If necessary, release and disconnect connector on front left
treble loudspeaker -R20-.
– Using appropriate workshop equipment, detach front left tre‐
ble loudspeaker -R20- from trim panel with interior door han‐
dle.
Installing
– Insert front left treble loudspeaker -R20- in trim panel with
interior door handle.
– Heat pins using appropriate workshop equipment so that
front left treble loudspeaker -R20- is seated securely and
flush in trim panel with interior door handle.
– If pulled off beforehand, reconnect connector on front left
treble loudspeaker -R20-.
– Install trim panel together with interior door handle ⇒ Gener‐
al body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 70; Front door trim panels;
Removing and installing trim panel.

2.4 Removing and installing rear treble

loudspeakers -R14-/-R16-
Rear left treble loudspeakers -R14-/rear right treble loudspeak‐
ers -R16- are located in rear door trim panels.

Note

Removal and installation are described for the left side. The
removal and installation procedure for the right-hand side is
basically the same.

Removing
– Switch off all electrical consumers.
– Switch off ignition.

-R171-.
– Attach protective cap for cable-set connector -VAS 6223/9-

6.1 Overview of multifunction steering

wheel
For a better usability of infotainment, telephone, navigation,
cruise control system and vehicle menu, buttons are integrated
in steering wheel. For Tiptronic, additional rocker switches are
provided to the right and to the left.
The control unit for multifunction steering wheel -J453- (multi‐
function buttons on left in steering wheel -E440-) reads the
button information and transfers them to control unit for steering
column electronics -J527- via LIN data bus. From control unit
for steering column electronics -J527- the data are transferred
to the individual devices via CAN bus (comfort) and data bus
diagnostic interface -J533-.
Fault finding is done via Guided fault finding ⇒ Vehicle
diagnostic tester.

Note

♦ The multifunction buttons -E441-/-E440- in the steering

wheel can only be renewed together as a unit.
♦ The multifunction buttons are screwed to the trim panel. The
trim panel is engaged in the steering wheel together with the
multifunction buttons. It is easier to remove the trim panel
using a wedge -T10383/2-.

Mobile online services are available only in conjunction with a
radio/RNS -RX1-.
For vehicles equipped with a telephone, the telephone functions
are integrated into the emergency call module control unit and
communication unit -J949-.
Fault finding
The mobile online services system is capable of self-diagnosis.
For fault finding, use vehicle diagnosis, testing and information
system in Guided fault finding function.

to understand the functions of the mobile online services
system.

♦ Make sure to properly insert the batteries (polarity) when

installing.
♦ The wrong kind of battery can damage the control unit be‐
yond repair. Replace the discharged battery only with a new
battery of the same voltage rating, the same size and the
same specifications.
♦ If the batteries are not renewed properly, the control unit
may become damaged.
♦ Observe the disposal regulations for the old battery.

9.6 Bringing ERA GLONASS into opera‐

tion

Note

ERA-GLONASS cannot be commissioned until certain criteria

have been fulfilled and the status LED lights up green.

If the status LED lights up red, proceed as follows:

– Connect vehicle diagnostic tester and select Start guided
fault finding .
– Choose program path as follows:
♦ Emergency call module and communication unit 2
♦ Boundary conditions for subsystems
♦ Commission ERA GLONASS J949
Various functions of the ERA GLONASS system are checked or
executed in the program:
♦ Check GPS reception
♦ Check GSM/UMTS reception
♦ Check DTCs
♦ Perform terminal 30 reset
Should the status LED still be lit red after 10 minutes, proceed
as follows:
– Create DISS ticket in ELSA.
– Proceed as instructed by the TSC.

Note

Russia: If the status LED lights up green and the test call fails,
e.g. through redial, a DISS report is also to be generated. Then

the system is active and fault-free. The system can be tested
only by means of a test call.
