Standard 7

This document discusses Standard 7 for teachers regarding communication. The standard emphasizes using effective written, verbal, nonverbal, and visual techniques to foster inquiry, collaboration, and interaction in the classroom. The response provides examples of how a teacher brochure demonstrates meeting this standard by informing parents of classroom events and policies and encouraging involvement, thereby facilitating communication between home and school. The teacher reflects that creating such a brochure annually will help generate parental support and create a welcoming environment for all students.

STANDARD 7 – Communication: The teacher uses knowledge of effective written, verbal,

nonverbal, and visual communication techniques to foster active inquiry, collaboration,

and supportive interaction in the classroom.

1. Write a paragraph explaining your knowledge and understanding of the standard—put the

standard into your own words.

Communication is a vital part of education. Teachers need to know how to reach their parents,

other faculty members, and students effectively. Teachers should set up an email list, a

communication tree, and establish connection with all families at the beginning of the school

year. This way the parents will always get the teachers comments, notes, or announcements

instead of getting pieces from their kids. Teachers also need to be able to communicate their

ideas, lessons, and activities accurately for their students to comprehend and perform to their

ability.

2. Explain how the artifact you chose demonstrates your understanding and application of the

standard.

The brochure I chose demonstrates how easy communicating to parents can be. It informs the

parents of what they can prepare their students on or about, upcoming school events, and projects

that will be going on in the classroom. There is also a spot for communication with the teacher

that also includes asking for volunteers. Taking this first step allows the parents to be

comfortable with you and more likely to help in any way that they can. It is also something good

to keep at home, so students and parents can refer to classroom rules together in case they get

into trouble.
3. A If the artifact has been used in your practice, reflect on how your teaching will change in

the future to further meet the standard.

B. If the artifact has not been used in your practice, i.e., a class assignment, reflect upon how

your teaching will be impacted by the assignment.

My teaching will change hopefully in the support I create by making this brochure at the start of

every year. I want to be honest and welcoming to the parents and this allows me to be straight

forward with them. I think by passing out a brochure or newsletter like this will generate

classroom helpers and parents wanting to be involved in the room. I also think it will create a

family like environment where parents, students and teacher can come together to discuss issues

in the class.

4. Conclude with a paragraph discussing how you are more prepared to Teach and Learn in a

Diverse Society as a result of satisfactorily meeting the standard.

Teaching in a diverse society requires reaching out and joining with those whose beliefs and

customs are different from our own. The brochure allows me as the teacher to introduce who I

am and what kind of classroom I expect. But it also gives parents reassurance on how I plan on

creating a positive community in the classroom. It tells the parents that I accept and welcome

their differences and aim to teach all of my students to have that same view. The brochure will

also help the parents become familiar with the school, what to expect, and how things are run in

a classroom. A lot of times families that come from another part of the world don’t know what

to expect in an American classroom, so the brochure is there to prepares them and also gives

them resources to take advantage of. It helps the parents and students feel at ease about joining

the classroom which promotes positive learning.
