Core Philosophy

Geely Automobile Research Institute is the core institution which undertakes the research, development and
design of Geely automobile products, and is the “dream factory” whereby Geely will make the dream of China’s
automobile industry come true.

More than 1,000 Engineering Technicians

Two academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, eight foreign
experts, dozens of doctoral degree holders, several hundred master’s degree holders, and several hundred
senior engineers and researchers, among which more than 400 persons participated in the development of
Geely CK.

R&D System
Peoduct Development Department: It possesses two sets of large-scale three-coordinate measuring systems for complete vehicle
and body, two sets of medium-scale three-coordinate measuring equipment and one set of high-precision three-coordinate measuring
system, and adopts the software CATIA from IBM, the three-dimensional parametrized CAD/CAE/CAPP integrated engineering
software from PTC and the engineering calculation and analysis optimization software from MSC. The application of modern design
method has reached the domestically-advanced level.

Trial Manufacturing & Experiment Department: The computer-aided development & design technologies are innovatively integrated
with the traditional manufacturing technologies which are based on sheet metal and mold, the fiberglass reinforced plastic & fatlute
forming art is perfectly incorporated into the modern digitally-controlled quick forming technology, and several production lines for
forming flexible vehicle/part sample, manufacturing body panel and carrying out trial assembly, so that the development of products is

Firstly, Geely CK is a “safe leading car” among economic cars to which Geely owns the
independent intellectual property rights and which is jointly developed by Geely and
Korea Daewoo International Co., Ltd. by taking “Safe Car” as development concept
and taking 28 three-dimension safety protection systems as technical support;

Secondly, Geely CK has been well received by consumers since its launch into the market. By
the end of July 2007, more than 140,000 vehicles have been sold, and Geely CK has
become the top sales performer among all 1.3L vehicle models. With respect to
the sales in ocerseas markets, by the end of July 2007, sales networks have been set
up in America, Europe, Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, 15,000 Geely CK
vehicles have been exported to more than 50 countries and regions including
Venezuela, Russia, Ukraine, Syria, South Africa and Peru, and many overseas
CKD/SKD production projects for Geely CK have been put into operation

Recognization of Geely CK — Technical Background
‹ Stamping Process
1. The stamping line, composed of 23 sets of high-precision 250-2000T enclosed-type
stamping machines and adopting the high-tonnage separate-assembly cold-rolling
stamping technology, can effectively increase the strength of body by more than 30％.
2. The drawing oil recommended by China Association of Automobile Manufacturers is
used in drawing of parts, so as to ensure that the surface of each stamping part is free
from defects including scratch, burr and hidden rupture.

‹ Welding Process
1. The welding line adopts the fully-automatic mechanic welding technologies and is equipped with
the C-CLNK control system, so that the operations including conveyance, positioning, loading,
clamping and welding are carried out automatically.
2. Four sets of ABB 6-axis high-performance robots imported from Sweden and several automatic
spot welding machine are adopted, so that the operations including conveyance, loading, clamping
and positioning are carried out automatically and the unmanned operation under manned
monitoring is realized.
3. There are 4210 uniform and standard welding points on the complete vehicle.

‹ Assembly Process

The C-CLINK control system is adopted as the control system for the main assembly
line. The integrated body side and the roof are conveyed, loaded, clamped and
positioned automatically, and the roof is welded automatically. The production on the
main assembly line keeps pace with the operation of unpainted body conveying line
and adjusting line, so that the unmanned operation under manned monitoring is
realized.

‹ Painting Process
1. The national painting standard for medium-class cars is adopted, and the painting process is
composed of 56 painting steps;
2. The phosphorizing liquid manufactured by Germany-based Chemetall (a supplier of Shanghai
Volkswagen) is used, so that the glossiness exceeds 95% (only 90% for ordinary vehicles) and
the duration of salt fog test exceeds 1,000 hours;
3. The chassis is painted with the anti-rubble coating, which effectively protects the chassis and
improves the driving safety .

through the road tests of which the total mileage reaches several
million kilometers. Each improvement on the product is subject to
strict tests, such as the poor road condition test in Xiangfan Vehicle
Test Field (wherein every one kilometer means 16 kilometers on
normal road);

‹ Departing from Shenzhen on July 30, 2005, Geely CK went through

11,000km road of extremely poor conditions, tramped over 6 snow

With the courage to overcome difficulties and face challenges, Geely CK went
through 11,000km road of extremely poor conditions in Yunnan and Tibet, passed
various natural barriers and virgin forest, tramped over 6 snow mountains each of

The body, composed of many metal structural members which are made of steel plate through stamping and many
large-sized covering parts, enjoys excellent impact resistance, can scientifically the impact force applied in various
angles, and can bring all-around safety to driver and passengers.

Knowledge Base

Importance of Body Structure

The safe structure of vehicle is the guarantee for driving safety. At the very beginning of the manufacturing of a
vehicle, some safety elements have been incorporated in the design, so that Geely CK has the safest body as
compared with the vehicles of the same class.
Classification of Body Structure
Generally, the body structure falls into three types, namely non-load-bearing body, semi-load-bearing body and
load-bearing body.

＊Note:
Semi-load-bearing body is a body structure between non-load-bearing body and load-bearing body, wherein the body is
rigidly connected with the base frame by means of welding or bolts so as to reinforce the base frame and make the base
frame partially play the role of vehicle frame. For example, the engine and suspension are mounted on the reinforced
base frame, and body is integrated with the base frame so as to jointly bear load. This structure is essentially a
frameless load-bearing body structure. Therefore, the body structure generally falls in non-load-bearing body and load-
bearing body.

What is non-load-bearing body?

Just as the name implies, a non-load-bearing body means that the body does not bear the load. Speaking in a more
popular way, a non-load-bearing body means that the body is equipped with a crossbeam, most of the load-bearing
task is undertaken by the crossbeam, and the body only plays the packing role.
Operating Principle
This kind of body is mounted on the cross beam along the length direction of the body through several rubber
cushions. The rubber cushions may absorb and reduce the impact and vibration from rugged road, so that the
vibration from road, engine, steering mechanism, transmission mechanism and suspension will not be transmitted
directly to the body, and thus the comfort of the occupants is enhanced.
Disadvantage
The advantage of non-load-bearing body is that the floor of the driver compartment and the passenger compartment
Non-load-bearing body structure is relatively high, which make it slightly inconvenient to get on and get off the vehicle. Generally, non-load-bearing
body is used on trucks, coaches and off-road vehicles.

What is load-bearing body?

Load-bearing body means the body composed of many metal structural members which are made of steel
plate through stamping and many large-sized covering parts. The upper portion of the load-bearing body and
the base frame are processed into an integral structure.

Advantage
Compared with the body structure commonly adopted on other vehicles of the same class of which the upper
portion is separated from the lower portion, the load-bearing body lays a firm foundation for the performance
and collision resistance of the vehicle. As for load-bearing body, high-strength steel is used in its structure. In
the past, only a few high-strength steel was used on vehicle, and most of it was in the form of the short steel
Load-bearing body rod attached to the bumper. Geely CK has adopted the design which is adopted by most of high-end cars, so

The advanced industrial point welding robots imported from Sweden guarantee the
welding quality, increase the rigidity, strengthen and sealing performance of the
vehicle, and ensure the safety of body!

Advantages of Laser Welding

Laser welding is an advanced welding process, whereby various steel plates can be
welded together, the rigidity, strengthen and leakproofness of the vehicle can be
raised, and thus the safety of complete vehicle is also improved!

Meaning of Figure 4210

Too many welding points mean that the steel plate of the body is composed of small
parts, while too few welding points mean that some portions are integrated and are not
compliant with the safety design concept. The 4210 laser welding points on Geely CK
come from the optimized design, are the most reasonable and will guarantee the safety!

Development Trend of Laser Welding

In North America, the application of laser welding is increased at the rate of 150-200
million pieces per year, and it is expected that the total amount will reach 750 million
pieces this year. In the automobile industry, especially in the production of high-end
cars, laser welding has become a standard process!

Integrated Body Side — Communication Skill

This ensures the overall safety of body in case of lateral collision. The integrated side body can effectively disperse the energy from lateral collision, so
that the safety of passenger is guaranteed.
Advantages of Integrated Body Side:
The integrated body side is made of a steel plate through stamping. It can construct to the greatest extent a safe interior space and prevent occupants
from getting hurt in case of lateral collision.
Concept Indispensable for GOA Body
GOA body means that the body has passed the Global Outstanding Assessment (internationally-advanced safety design). The core technology is the
high-strengthen driver compartment and the body structure which can efficiently absorb impact energy. When the vehicle is involved in collision, the
energy-absorbing body and the high-strength driver compartment can effectively absorb the impact energy, and then disperse the energy to each
portion of the body, so as to minimize the deformation of the driver compartment and thus ensure the safety of driver and passengers in the
compartment. The integrated body side plays an important role. In the course of collision, the dangerous extent depends on the speed at which the
energy is transferred, After the vehicle is collided, the integrated body side can quickly transfer the energy to the rear portion and make the rear portion
deform. The high-tension steel plates can well absorb the energy arising from the collision, and their strength and ductility are much higher than those
of ordinary galvanized steel plates. At present, most of these steel plates are imported, and some are manufactured by Baoshan Steel Group. (All the
steel plates used on Geely CK are the high-strength and high-tension quality steel plates manufactured by Korea Pohang and Baoshan Steel Group)
The most obvious advantage of high-tension steel plates is that, in case of lateral collision, they can prevent the body from dividing into two parts and
thus ensure the safety!

Two Anti-collision Steel Beam in Each of Four Doors — Communication Skill

The two high-strength anti-collision steel beams, just like a solid wall, ensure the safety of occupants in the vehicle in case of collision.
Most of other vehicles of the same class adopt the design of single steel beam.

Design Concept
It is well known that, when a vehicle is involved in a lateral collision, its doors may deform under impact, so that the occupants may
get directly injured. In order to improve the safety of the vehicle, two firm steel beams, commonly called as side door anti-collision bar,
are mounted in each of the four doors of Geely CK.

Safety Protection
The role of anti-collision bar is as follows: When the side door is collided, the firm anti-collision bar will greatly reduce the
deformation of the side door, so as to reduce the injury incurred by occupants. This is also the safe equipment only available on
high-end cars.

Safety — 5. ABS+EBD

Role of ABS
ABS is the abbreviation of anti-lock brake system. At first, ABC was used on airplane, and now it has become the standard equipment of high-end
cars. It is well known that, when braking the vehicle, the brake pedal can’t be pushed down with one step, rather, the braking operation should be
carried out in several steps, with the brake pedal pushed down and released in turn, until the vehicle finally stops. In the course of emergency braking,
however, it is always necessary to stop the vehicle immediately, and it is very desirable that the vehicle can be stopped with one step. In such case,
owing to the fact that the wheel may be locked up and stop rotating, the vehicle may be involved in dangerous situation, such as loss of turning ability
caused by locked front wheels and rear-end whipping caused by locked rear wheels. ABS is mounted for the purpose of settling the problem that
wheels may be locked up in the course of braking operation. A vehicle equipped with ABS can effectively maintain the wheels in rotating state rather
than locked up, so that the stability of vehicle in the course of braking operation and the braking performance of vehicle under poor road conditions
are greatly improved.
Operating Principle
ABS continuously detects the rotating speed of each wheel with the help of the rotating speed sensor mounted on each wheel or transmission shaft,
calculates the slip ratio of each wheel through a computer (whether a wheel is locked up is judged on the basis of skip ratio), compares the
calculated value with the ideal skip ratio, decides to increase or decrease the brake pressure, and then orders the actuating mechanism to adjust the
brake pressure in a timely manner, so as to maintain the wheels under ideal braking conditions. Therefore, ABS can get the wheels always braked
under the condition that slight skip occurs rather than locked up, so as to achieve the goal of improving the braking performance.

Operating Background of EBD

EBD is the abbreviation of electric brake force distribution. When the vehicle is being braked, the conditions of the ground area to which the four tires are adhered may vary
from each other. For example, in some cases the left front wheel and right rear wheel are adhered to dry cement ground while the right front wheel and the left rear wheel are
adhered to wet or muddy ground. This situation may cause difference among the four wheels in friction force between ground in the course of braking operation and then the
vehicle may skid, tilt or roll over.

Operating Principle of EBD

The operating principle of EBD is detailed as follows: At the moment that the vehicle is being braked, a high-speed computer will be used to sense conditions of the ground to
which the four wheels are adhered and then calculate the friction force of each wheel; the braking devices on the four tires will then carry out braking operation in different
modes and forces on the basis of the calculation result, and continuous adjustment to braking mode and braking force will be made in the course of movement, so as to match
the braking force with the friction force and thus ensure that the vehicle is stable and safe.

Double Front Airbag — Communication Skill

Two airbags are mounted for driver seat and front passenger seat. When the vehicle is involved in a
collision, the airbags can be activated in time, so as to reduce the impact force, protect the breast and front
side of occupants, and raise the safety of occupants.

Front Three-point Pretensioned-type Height-adjustable Seat Belt — Communication Skill

Upon the occurrence of collision, the pretension device will get activated immediately, and then the seat belt will be
tensioned quickly and fix the passenger onto the seat firmly, so as to prevent to the great extent the driver and
passengers from incurring secondary collision and avoid the accidental injury caused by airbag in operation. When the
tensile force of the seat belt exceeds the pre-determined limit, the tensile force limiter will immediately reduce the
locking force of the seat belt, so as to prevent the pressure applied on the breast of occupants from becoming

The advanced collapsible design is adopted. When the steering column is involved in collision, it will
collapse, disperse the impact force and sufficiently absorb the impact force. By preventing the steering
column from bursting out and impacting the driver and reducing the force applied by the steering wheel
on the driver, the driver will be well protected.

Central Locking System — Communication Skill

When the vehicle speed exceeds 30km/h, the four doors will be locked up automatically. If any door is not closed properly, the
horn will sound, so as to ensure the safety of driver and passengers as well as the safety of their belongings. For example, we
often find on road that many running vehicles have their doors unclosed but their drivers have no idea about that, and this
situation involves great hidden danger; in addition, if no door-opening action is carried out within 30 seconds after any door is

The modern vehicle designers, by adopting the aerodynamic principles, design the curve of vehicle body as clear and smooth as
possible, so that the air current will be changed or directed, the head-on air current will bypass the body easily, and thus the air
resistance will be reduced and the stability of the vehicle will be enhanced. This kind of body of which the air resistance coefficient is
very small can be called as streamlined body.

Streamlined bodies vary from each other in streamline extent, which is generally expressed by streamline coefficient. The half value of
wind resistance coefficient CD is taken as the value of streamline coefficient C. If the wind resistance coefficient of a vehicle is 0.30,
then its streamline coefficient is 0.15. Just like the wind resistance coefficient, the lower the streamline coefficient is, the better the

based Bosch, is a domestically-advanced high-performance gasoline engine, and has passed the high-

Type and Characteristics

Geely CK is equipped with the M7.9.7 fuel injection ECU system newly developed by Germany-based
Bosch. The inline 16-valve 4-cylinder engine is technologically mature, has successfully passed various
strict tests carried out by the competent authorities of China, and is of stable and reliable quality. The
maximum speed exceeds 170km/h, the powerful engine provides the vehicle running at high speed with
sufficient backup power, so that the dynamic performance of the vehicle at low speed is improved, and
the stability of the vehicle is very high. Near 5 million sets of engines developed with this technology
have been sold, among which over 500,000 sets have been sold domestically.
