FIELD EXPERIENCE/INTERNSHIP INFORMATION
What is a field experience/internship?
It is the opportunity for you to spend approximately 40 hours or more with one or more
employees at a business, non-profit organization, or government agency. The objective is to
provide you with the opportunity to improve your skills and get first-hand experience in a career
in math and science.
Why is it important?
This will help you consider options for the future and look at opportunities in math and science.
In addition, it will give you experience which you need for college and other post-high school
plans.
When is it?
The length and time of your field experience/internship depends on your schedule and the
employer’s schedule. Some students have chosen to do it one-two days a week, after school and
others have chosen to do it throughout the summer or over one week during the summer. It
must be a minimum of forty hours with the same organization.
How do I sign up?
1. Think about a career involving math, science and/or technology that you might be
interested in pursuing after high school. If you have any questions about whether or
not your experience qualifies, contact the ISM office.
2. Contact the organization and see if they have opportunities for you to do your field
experience/ internship. The ISM office will also provide ideas and opportunities.
However, it will be up to you to contact an organization. If you need assistance
contacting an organization, the ISM office will help you.
3. Complete an Internship Plan and submit it to the ISM office BEFORE beginning your
internship.
How do I get credit for my internship?
After completing your field experience/internship, turn in to the ISM office by May 1, 2009:
1. Internship log
2. Reflection form
3. Supervisor’s report
4. Copy of your thank you note
Important facts to remember about your field experience/internship . . .
