Worksheet No.16 Gametogenesis

This worksheet provides objectives and instructions for students to diagrammatically outline the processes of spermatogenesis and oogenesis using a hypothetical animal with 4 chromosomes. Students are asked to label diagrams showing the progression from a single spermatogonium and oogonium through meiosis, denoting maternal chromosomes in red and paternal chromosomes in blue. Questions ask students to explain how fertilization restores diploidy and to identify chromosome counts at each stage of spermatogenesis for an organism with a haploid number of 8 chromosomes.

WORKSHEET NO.

16
GAMETOGENESIS

Name:__________________________________________ Date:_________________
Course and Year:_________________________________

Objectives:
1. Define gametogenesis.
2. Identify the different stages of gametogenesis.
3. Differentiate oogenesis and spermatogenesis
4. Discuss the significance of meiosis.

Procedure:
Create and label a diagrammatic outline of the process of spermatogenesis and
oogenesis in your worksheet, using a hypothetical animal with a chromosome number
of 4. The diagram begins with a single spermatogonium and oogonium. Use a red pencil
to denote the maternal chromosomes and blue pencil to denote the paternal
chromosomes. Consult your textbook and lecture notes for more thorough
understanding of these processes.
Questions:
1. Explain how fertilization restores the diploid number of chromosome in new
individual of a species.
2. In an organism with a haploid chromosome number of 8,how many
chromosomes are present in the spermatogonium? In a primary spermatocyte?
In secondary spermatocyte? In a first polocyte? In secondary polocyte?
