[Probability] Calculating Expected Value of a
raffle
Hey there, working on an expected value question and I know
generally how to calculate EV, but I just have a question about a
limited number of tickets sold type problem
Problem - Given the following information, what is the EV of a lottery
ticket after it is purchased?
Tickets Sold: One thousand $2 tickets.
One prize of $1000
Three of $100
Five of $20
Would the correct way to go about this problem be
$1000(1/1000) + $100(3/1000) + $20(5/1000) + $-2(991/1000) = -$0.58
I'm pretty sure it is, I just wanted to double check! Sorry for the
stupid question!

Almost. You assume only those 991 people lose 2 dollars,
but the ones that win something still had to pay for their
ticket. So actually they only win 998, 98 and 18 respectively.
Another way to do it is to take the sum of the amounts
(both won ans lost) and divide it by the amount of tickets:
1000 + 300 + 100 - 2000 = -600
-600 / 1000 = -0.60

"Mathematics seems to consists of proofs, but it is not quite
so. Finished mathematics consists of proofs, but
mathematics in the making consists of guesses" (George

There are way too many resources available, so I spend
most of my time bouncing between them. How do I narrow
down what resources to use?
I'm a CS student taking math classes. I'm becoming overwhelmed by the
sheer volume of resources available to learn mathematics that I barely
spend any time on any one resource. I bounce between Khan Academy,
Professor Leonard, James Stewart's textbooks, lecture notes..
The result is that my learning feels very haphazard and shallow. I need to
choose a resource and dig deep into it otherwise I'll be stuck in this endless
(pardon my French here) fuck-around-itis.
What resources and learning methods have worked best for you guys?

Good books to relearn math
Hello, sorry if there are posts about this already but I'm looking for good
books to help me with math concepts. Probably need to start around
algebra. I don't do well with using Kahn academy other than to supplement
learning. I need to rinse and repeat examples. Thanks!

Why do we want an orthogonal basis?
What is it about an orthogonal basis that makes calculating the coordinates
of vectors easy?

Is brillaint.org worth paying money?
I was thinking of learning mathematics from the city for GMAT and
competitive job. Also, the analytical ability is important to learn. Is buying a
subscription to brilliant.org worthy? Please share your option.

Calc III struggles
Hi everyone, I am just not understanding the material in calc III and I’m
starting to lose motivation in this class and math in general because of it. I
really enjoyed calc I and II, I understood everything and thought calculus
was very interesting. But I’ve hit a point where I don’t understand what’s
going on in my current calc class, the whole class is online due to Covid and
all I do is work on interactive notes which is not allowing me to grasp the
material (it also makes it very boring).
I am taking diff eq over the summer and I’m nervous that I’m not prepared
for it because of this class. I am going to pass with a low C (if I’m lucky). I
have a few questions and I would appreciate it if I got some help.
How important is calc III going into diff eq?
