and RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD

What is Dating?
Dating is an activity in which people get together. It
is also a way for people to be more aware of who they are
and to acquire social and interpersonal skills. The main
purpose in dating is to determine compatibility between two
people. Compatibility predicts the success and happiness of
a marriage.

What is Courtship?
This is the stage in which a man and a woman assess
each other. This provides an opportunity for both to determine
if companionship could be sustained over a period of time
without becoming boring or filled with conflict. The duration of
the process should be enough to allow young people to know
the character and disposition of each other very well. This is a
stage in preparation for marriage which is essential to a successful marriage.
In a general sense, courtship period can be divided into three stages:
1. Dating – main purpose is to get acquainted and enjoy social activities with
members of opposite sex to develop skills in boy-girl relationship.
2. Serious Courtship – field of dating has narrowed to one or two persons, and
for the purpose of selection of the he marriage partner.
3. Engagement – the selection has been made and two people agree to
marry each other.
WHAT IS MARRIAGE?
Marriage is defined as the most committed male-female
relationship. It is also a legal contract held together by bonds of
intimacy and sharing.

Other definition of marriage are as follow:

ARTICLE 1 of the family code of the Philippines - Marriage is a special contract
of permanent union between a man and a woman entered into accordance
with law for the establishment of ecological and family life.

ARTICLE 52 of the Philippine Civil Code - Marriage is not a mere contract but
an inviolable institution. Its nature consequences and incidents are governed
by law and not subject to stipulation except that the marriage settlements
may to certain extent fix the property relations during the marriage.

What are the various forms of marriage?

• MONOGAMY - union of the man and one woman for a varying period of
time. This has been the persistent type until present. This is widely practiced
among cultures and societies, and most especially in Christian religions. The

4|Page

strength of monogamy is that both father and mother unite their efforts in
rearing their children. Thus, a better degree of attention will be given to the
training of children by both parents than under any other form of marriage.
• POLYGAMY - the state or practice of having two or more wives or husbands
at a time.
a. POLYGYNY - a man has two or more wives at the same time. This is
common in many societies in the old times. This arrangement gives more
pleasure, prestige, and power to the man.
b. POLYANDRY - a woman has two or more husbands at a time. This
practice is mainly due to the numerical disproportion between sexes
such as among primitive people. During those times, male births usually
largely outnumber the females in certain rugged and relatively barren
countries.
TEENAGE MARRIAGE
What are the causes of teenage marriage?
1. Premarital Pregnancy
2. Impulsive decision-making
3. Perceived solution to problems

Why do teenage marriages usually fail?

1. Insufficient Maturity - A teenager may be intellectually capable to earn
a living but still emotionally immature to meet the demands of married
life. Persons under 20 are still undergoing some biological and
psychological changes.
2. Insufficient Financial Resources – Teenagers are normally still schooling.
Find a stable job that could sustain a starting family is hard due to lack of
academic training and required knowledge and skills.
3. Wrong reason for marrying – marriage as a way to escape problems
Marriage, however, serves to aggravate one’s existing problem or
multiply them by combining them with his/her partner’s own problems.
4. Lack of understanding of marriage responsibility

What are some marital practices and setups across countries?

Understanding the marital practices of various countries of the world is
important especially for interracial marriage. The problem on how to raise the
children is common in such setup. The conflict is mainly which culture and/or
language should be adopted by the child.

In Africa, there is a norm of substitutability. Since mass polygyny is practiced,

a wife can be replaced or substituted with another wife by the husband if
she fails to bear heirs. A brother can replace the husband if he dies.
A Chinese family, if highly patriarchal, follows the three rules of obedience:
a daughter obeys her father; a married woman obeys her husband; and a
widow obeys her son.
In India, arranged marriages are still being practiced to be able to preserve
endogamy, where mates are selected from within one’s social group, such
as caste, tribe, race, or religion.
In Indonesia, matrilineal family pattern is observed, where inheritance is
passed on to sons or relatives of the mother. There is also extended enforced
endogamy, where decisions on marriage of one family member are made
collectively. Indonesia emphasizes on having smaller families and gives
importance on the health of women.
In United States and Canada, the neolocal family pattern is being followed,
where a couple should be financially ready to build their own household.

It is a benign or noncancerous tumor that MYOMA (fibroid)

builds in or around uterus. Among the
symptoms of this condition are
abdominal, pelvic, or lower back pain
that can be severe, episodic or constant
abdominal pressure, abdominal swelling,
distension or bloating, heavy bleeding
during menstrual periods, pain during
sexual intercourse, urgent need to
urinate, and vaginal bleeding between
menstrual periods.

Below are the health conditions that may occur during pregnancy.
1. Pre-eclampsia – it is a condition wherein the pregnant mother
experiences high blood pressure and high amount or protein in urine. It
should be closely monitored because it may lead to eclampsia, the
episodes of seizure during pregnancy.
2. Placenta Previa – It is a complication wherein the placenta is inserted in
the lower uterine segment, may be partial or whole. This is very critical
because the fetus relies on the placenta for food and air coming from
the mother’s body system.
3. Gestational diabetes – It is a condition wherein a mother who is not
diabetic acquire high level of blood glucose during pregnancy. The
insulin receptors of the cells do not function properly due to the presence
of human placental lactogen which facilitates the supply of energy to
the fetus.

WHAT SHOULD BE OBSERVED AT POST-PREGNANCY?

POST-PARTUM DISORDER – After childbirth, the mother would have mood

swings as a result of hormonal fluctuations or hormonal changes. It happens 3
to 5 days after delivery and eventually normalizes as the hormone levels
become stable. This mood swing is also known as post-partum blues or “baby
blues.” You might have seen a mother who would always cry after giving birth.
Well, it’s just part of the baby blues.

SEPSIS – it is a severe infection which results to fatal whole body inflammation

lead to organ dysfunction and may still continue even after the infection is
gone. It may be caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites in the blood
or other organs of the body. The mother and the baby can be infected by
sepsis.
*This may be treated with intravenous fluids and antibiotics.

MATERNAL NUTRITION
Why is maternal nutrition important during pregnancy?
Biologically, the nourishment that the mother gives to her body is the
same nourishment acquired by the baby inside her. So it is basically important
that the mother makes it to a point that she only eats healthful food.

FOOD TIPS FOR THE MOTHER DURING PREGNANCY:

1. Eat food from each of the food groups every

day (vegetables, fruits, grains/cereals, proteins,
milk/dairy products).
2. Drink plenty of water.
3. Avoid caffeinated drinks like cola and coffee.
4. Eat small amounts of food high in fats, sugar, and
salt.
5. Eat food that is freshly prepared.
6. Eat a balanced diet.
7. Take multivitamins.
WHY IS PRENATAL CARE IMPORTANT?
Prenatal care is very important for both mother and baby. It is a care
program that a pregnant woman must undergo. Conditions like diabetes, low
weight gain, and high blood pressure can bring danger to the fetus if not
treated. The baby’s health is monitored by checking the heartbeat, the size
and positioning of the uterus and the fetus. Early detection of any
abnormalities will allow proper and immediate treatment. The health of both
the mother and the baby is guaranteed with proper prenatal care.

Why is postnatal care important?

It is also important that the health of the mother and the baby should
be monitored after birth. It is the postnatal period. The first six weeks after birth
is very critical for both the mother and the baby. Death and disability may
occur is enough care will not be given to them.
Most postnatal deaths of the mother happen during the first weeks or
during the first 24 hours after childbirth.

Hemorrhage, sepsis, and infections are the common causes of maternal deaths.

Some babies die because of asphyxia or lack of oxygen on their first

day. Others die due to preterm or premature birth and infections.
To be able to save mothers and babies, early detection and treatment
of complications after childbirth are necessary.
Here are the danger signs for both the mother and the baby as listed
by World Health Organization:

Danger Signs for the Mother Danger Signs for the Baby

 Excessive bleeding  Convulsions

 Foul smelling vaginal discharge  Movement only when stimulated
or no movement even when

NEWBORN SCREENING - can detect metabolic disorders, hormonal, and blood
disorders. These disorders may affect the use of nutrients in the baby’s body
and may prevent having healthy tissues as well as the production of enough
energy.

Genetic or inherited disorders may also be detected through newborn

screening. These may affect the baby’s normal development physically and
mentally.
Newborn screening allows the parents to know certain conditions of
their baby that may eventually cause problems. Early detection and diagnosis
prepare the parents for the proper care and attention they should give for
their baby.

Why is APGAR scoring system important?

After the baby’s birth, a quick evaluation of the newborn’s physical

condition is done. It is the very first test of the known as the APGAR score. It
can tell it the newborn needs extra medical or emergency care.
Its name came from its developer in 1952, Virginia Apgar, but later
became acronym which means Appearance, Pulse, Grimace, Activity, and
Respiration.
Medical personnel like doctors, midwives, or nurses give their score by
combining all the five factors which may range from 0 to 10. The score of 10 is
not commonly obtained.

What is Essential Newborn Care (ENC) protocol, or Unang yakap?

In the Philippines, the Department of Health under Administrative Order
2009-0025 has implemented the ENC Protocol, which is a step-by-step guide
for health workers and medical practitioners. They should follow this protocol
after childbirth.
The step-by-step procedure of ENC Protocol or Unang Yakap is
presented in a video provided by DOH at http://unangyakap.doh.gov.ph.

Immediate drying

Proper cord clamping and cutting

Uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact

Non-separation of the newborn from the mother

for early breastfeeding initiation and rooming in

BREASTFEEDING
As part of the ENC protocol, breastfeeding is given the utmost importance.
The World Health Organization highly recommends breastfeeding. It is
now strictly implemented in all public hospitals to have all newborns to be
breastfed by their mothers. It aims to allow the baby to get the substance
colostrum from the mother’s milk which will be the source of antibodies and
protection of the baby. In the first six months of the baby, he/she must be
exclusively breastfed.

The following are detailed descriptions on the importance of breastfeeding:

 BREAST MILK AS FOOD. The main ingredients in human milk are sugar
(lactose), easy-to-digest protein (whey and casein), and digestible fatty
acids
 BREAST MILK AND PROTECTION AGAINST DISEASE. For the first three to four
days after delivery, a woman secretes colostrum, an antibody rich yellow
fluid that precedes milk production. It is the colostrum that asses the

mother’s antibodies, substances that protect against infection, onto the

breastfed baby.
 PRACTICAL BENEFITS. Breast feeding is inexpensive. Most women are
encouraged to increase their caloric intake by 500 calories while
lactating, which cost only one third of the price of commercial milk
formula.
 PSYCHOLOGICAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS. Many women report that
nursing helps them to feel closer to their baby and more able to protect
and care for their child.
 CONTRACEPTION. Breastfeeding suppresses ovulation and menstruation
for some time. These processes will resume if they wish to delay their next
pregnancy.
Why is immunization important in protecting children’s health?
While babies get antibodies from placenta while they are growing and
developing in their mother’s milk through breastfeeding, they are just
temporary.
Immunization makes the child become immune or protected from
diseases by setting small dosages of killed or weakened microorganisms, may
be bacteria or viruses that bring about a particular disease. Vaccines are
injected and stimulate the immune system of the child.

RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD
What is responsible parenthood?
They family is the foundation of a society. What make
a good and responsible family are equally good and
responsible parents. This means that young members of the
family should have the guidance of good mature members
of a family. In the absence of parents, grandparents, close
relatives, or foster parents should do the task of nurturing
and guiding young members of the family. This is to prepare
the children to become good member of a community,
school, and country.
Normally, as the baby grows, the parents serve as his/her main support.
Emotionally, starting from the mother’s womb as the baby is being developed,
he/she already feels the love and affection of his/her mother. When he/she is born,
people around such as family members add to emotional foundation of the baby.

What are the important roles and responsibilities of parents in child rearing and
care?

THE FATHER

 The head or leader of the family and his authority is

respected by his wife and children.
 Sets rules for all the members of the family to observe and
to maintain order, discipline, and harmony.
 Breadwinner or provider of the needs of his family. Thus, it’s his
main duty to earn a living to support the necessities of his wife children.
 Should be an active helper to his wife in rearing the children.

THE MOTHER
 The heart/light of the family. In the absence of the father,
the mother rules in the home.
 Holds the family together by managing the household and
guiding the lives of its members.
 The primary in-charge of taking care of the children. Tends
to the needs of her children.
 Makes sure that the family guidelines and decisions are observed.
 Teaches, supervises, and discipline the children whenever necessary.

BOTH PARENTS
 Taking care of and rearing the children
 Protecting their children’s welfare.
 Teaching values and good examples to the children
 Guidance and support
 Discipline and regulation

What are the effects of family size on family health?

Family size affects the health of the family. As it was mentioned in the
earlier discussions, more members in the family would mean more needs to
address. Crowding within the household would result to poor cleanliness and
hygiene. This eventually would result to the presence of a disease or illness that
may also be infecting members of the family. A bigger a family size would
mean lesser capacity for the parents to provide good nutrition especially if the
income is not enough for the family. This situation leads to undernourishment
of the children and may result to shorter height and susceptibility to diseases.

What are the effects of rapid population growth?

Since the world populations grows rapidly and there is no increase of
space on earth, it affects the carrying capacity between the environment
and the individual. Having a small size number of children can improve the
quality of living of the family. The parents can sustain the needs of their children
financially, physically, and mentally. The parents can also give more attention
and supervision to their children.

WHAT ARE THE MODERN FAMILY PLANNING METHODS?

According to the Department of Health, family planning is having the
desired number of children and when you want to have them by using safe
and effective modern methods. Proper birth spacing is having children 3 to 5
years apart, which is best for the health of the mother, her child, and the
family.

The modern family planning methods can be classified into natural and
artificial.
The natural family planning relies only on a woman’s fertility signs, also
known as the Rhythm or Calendar Method.
The artificial family planning methods may use barriers like male and
female condoms, sponges, spermicides, hormone shots, birth control pill, and
IUD (intrauterine device). The couple may also choose sterilization surgeries like
vasectomy for males and tubal ligation for females.
