Introduction,
Why Wastewater Pumping Station?
2
1-1 Introduction
Water Supply, Wastewater and sanitation are not only the basic
necessities of life, they are also crucial for achieving the goal of “Health
for All”. Increased sanitation coverage is directly linked to improvement
of health status.
Water supply coupled with Wastewater Treatment and Sludge Disposal
are the basic needs that have to be provided with reliability, sustainability
and affordability. And are essential in order to facilitate the Customers to
lead a healthy and productive life.
Wastewater Pump Stations convey wastewater from developed areas
where natural landform and gradients do not allow for a gravity system to
be used. It is important that factors affecting a Pump Stations operation
are understood as the effect of an overflow on the surrounding area
and/or watercourses is not desired due to important cultural, ecological
and environmental implications and to avoid problems relating to public
health and pollution of water bodies.

1-2 Why Wastewater Pumping Station?
The necessity of Wastewater Pumping Station arises under the
following circumstances:
A- When the area of a town is so low lying that it cannot be drained
by gravity to discharge into a sub-main or main unless the entire
sewerage system in the other parts is installed correspondingly at low
level. In such circumstances, it is more economical to pump the
Wastewater from the low lying area into the upper branch mains.
B- Pumping is restored to, at intervals for a sewage system in a flat
Sites, since laying of sewers at the designed grade continuously
all along will mean expensive excavation.
4
1-2 Why Wastewater Pumping Station? (Cont.)
C- Pumping is resorted to when outfall sewer is at lower level than the
body of water into which it is to be discharged, or when the outfall is
lower than the entrance to the treatment plant.
D- When a sewer has to go across a high ridge, it will more economical to
pump it into sewer laid across the slope of the ridge at reasonable
depth, rather than driving a tunnel.
E- Pumping is required to take out sewage
from the cellars or subbasements of
buildings, when the level of caller is
much lower than the invert level of
sewer to which drainage connection is
to be made. 5
1-4 Problem in Wastewater Pumping Station
• Pumping of Wastewater is not as simple as pumping of water, since
the following special problems are to be faced in Wastewater pumping:
- Wastewater has foul characteristics
- Wastewater Contains a lot of suspended and floating materials
Which may make the running of pumps difficult and may cause frequent
clogging of the pumps.
• Wastewater contains organic and
inorganic wastes which may cause
corrosion and erosion of parts of the
pumps and reduce the lifts of the
pumps.
6
1-4 Problems in Wastewater Pumping Station (Cont.)
• The rate of flow of Wastewater varies continuously and hence
pumping operation are to be adjusted accordingly.
• The size of sump is limited since large sized sumps will result in the
settlement of silts and organic matter at its bottom.
• The pumps should be of high order reliability
since failure of pumps will lead to flooding
which may cause unbearable nuisance.
• If WWPS served area Contains Industrial
Factories, it must take care to control Factory
effluents (Apply Laws) or To specify special Materials to cover all
effluents Contents. (Examples: All WWPSs that serve Industrial Cities
suffer from that). 7
1-4 Problems in Wastewater Pumping Station (Cont.)
• In a number of industrial cities, it is proved that the failure of the
collection of industrial drainage for all activities through passing on
networks ,lifting stations and treatment plants for the following main
reasons:
- The absence of technology to treat industrial wastewater for all
industrial activities.
- New compounds and substances are chemical reactions of different
activities outputs and makes it difficult to identify these compounds to
treat it.
• However, it is possible to control this subject by combining factories with
similar activities in their uses and outputs within a single scope that can
be implemented with an industrial drainage project for these factories
(factories to pay all the cost) and thus for all other activities.
