Philosophy of Education

I am choosing a profession in education, though I am going to change my major to be a

special education teacher instead. I feel I will be more involved with the students, and I feel I

have a lot of patience and passion for teaching; teaching special education is more along my path

of what I want out of this profession. I want to make a difference, and I feel these students need

help more than others. I had a poor experience with my field observations this semester, only

because the teacher was not at all very hands-on; everything was done online through a variety of

programs. The teacher did not appear to enjoy her job too much, she kept the classroom quiet

and had them doing their daily stuff in a very self-teaching way, which is not very progressive in

my experience growing up in online schools. I believe that students need a teacher who is

involved, actively helping them learn and grow. I know that teaching as a profession is very

demanding and requires a lot of patience and dedication, especially with special education. I am

ready to work hard to achieve my goal, I feel it is the right path for me.

I lean closer to the perennial teacher philosophy; however, I believe that the idea of

teaching should be involved, and it is not something that should really be self-taught because

people get things wrong often, especially without fact-checking. Teaching should be hands-on,

and I feel that with the lack of teachers these days it is hard to really keep teachers who are as

dedicated to their work as they set out to be. How I will think about children and schools is the

same as any person should view children and their education system. We are progressing in

schools and becoming better as a society, but I do not feel my thoughts and opinions have

changed due to knowledge of historical education events and laws.

When it comes to learning, I feel students need to be involved in activities that are fun, hands-on,

and even sensory to help them feel more motivated to learn. If I can implement a system into my

class where the students can enjoy the learning process and not feel like it is tedious work, then I

consider it an overall win. I welcome student diversity and variability; it is amazing how it is

been integrated into schools all around the United States and even other countries where students

study abroad. When it comes to behavior, I feel it will always be a mixed bag and I am prepared

for it. Of course, there will be a consequence system in place for my students and a type of

warning placed prior to letting the students know if things are getting too out of hand.

4. Future: What qualities do you need to possess to move forward in this career? What specific

steps (education, licensing, employment, volunteer experiences) do you plan to undertake in

order to achieve your goals?

Teachers and soon to be teachers need to be passionate about the career path they have

chosen. They also need patience; students can be a lot of work at times and teachers need to be

prepared for that. When it comes to education, all teachers must complete a 4-year education

program for their grade level/specific teaching path and obtain their bachelor’s in that specific

field. Once they complete their internship, and their end of the course exam, they will receive

their degree and licensing once they apply. Colleges often help you get into a school for

employment, you will have to speak to your advisor to have you directed to a school to teach.

Teachers also must do volunteering experiences in edu courses prior to getting their bachelor’s.
