E8. Read the text about an artist. Choose the correct answer: A, B, C
You can’t buy a drawing by Julian Beever and you can’t see his work in a gallery or
museum. Julian makes his amazing pictures on the pavements of city streets. People
have called him “the Pavement Picasso” and perhaps you have seen his pictures on the
Internet.
Page 15
Julian has made hundreds of pieces of “pavement art” in different countries – in
many parts of Europe and also in the USA, Australia, Japan, Argentina, and Brazil.
His drawings can take three or four days to finish. But because he draws with chalk,
the drawings only stay for a short time. When people walk on them or when it rains,
they quickly disappear. For Julian, this isn’t a problem. The drawings survice in the
photos he has taken, and this the most important thing for him.
Julian’s fame hasn’t come from experts in the art world, but from the Internet. “The
reason why my work has become well known is because people like it and they’ve sent
it to each other on the Internet. “ he says. “ So I know that what I do is popular.”
Julian Beever is from Leicestershire in England, but he now lives in Belgium.

MUSIC AND ARTS
Hi! My name is Andrew. I’m twenty years old. I love music. My earliest memory of
music is the song my mother used to sing to me when I was about three or four years
old. I used to have music lessons at school too. My mother wanted me to take up
the piano, but I didn’t like it at all because I loved to play the guitar. When I was ten
I bought my first record with some birthday money. I think it was the record by the
Beatles.
As I grew older, my musical taste changed. When I was a teenager, we used to go to
clubs and pop concerts to groups playing live, mostly rock and pop. At that time I
Page 21
didn’t like classical music at all. Later, when I went to university, I really got into
classical music and started going to concerts. I was particularly keen on opera.
Nowadays, I listen to all sorts of music, but I’m not too keen on loud rock music. On
the whole I prefer classical music and opera, but I still listen to pop music in my car
and play the guitar sometimes. I haven’t been to any concerts for ages, but I’ve
always got a CD on at home. Music is an important part in my life.

According to Holly Hall, more than half of American teenagers and young adults
volunteered in 2011. Three quarters of people aged 13 to 22 whose friends
volunteered regularly also did voluntary work. There was nearly twice the number of
those who pursued voluntary activities based on their concern about particular social
issues.
There were various volunteer projects they could carry out. For example, helping
the elderly at a nursing home, organizing a library by collecting used books,
newspapers, magazines and other materials, cleaning and fixing playgrounds, parks
and river banks, painting classrooms and community houses.
Types of voluntary activities depend on the gender of volunteers. Boys are more
likely to undertake physical activities such as environmental cleanup or working with
younger children in sports, while girls are more likely to help the homeless and other
