Synopsis
A graduated Andrea Sach who was study in the field of journalism has been hired
by the Runway Fashion Magazine. Even the job was not her dream job but she sees an
opportunities in the future will open widely if she working in this big company at least
for a year. The first Emily told advice Andrea about the situation in workplace. After
several change that Andrea made to his personality it indirectly affecting her private life
and her relation with her boyfriend, her family and her friends. At the end Andrea learn
that life is made of choices.
Issue Revealed In The Movie
In the devil wears prada it has shows many issue that impact the organization member in
many aspect. There are many factor that caused the issue to occur in a workplace and is
is not only come from their own self the environment,
Personality And Environment
In the movie The Devils Wears Prada after Andrea been accepted to working in
the Runway company she found out that the workplace was not suit her at all. This is
because Andrea is not the type of girl who focus on fasion. She is the girl who only use a
simplest plain style as long as it look good to her. But in a Runways company the
situation is different. When she first came to work on her first working day, Miranda
Priestly who act as her boss was not interested in the way Andrea wear her outfit and
Miranda assume that she had made a mistake by giving Andrea a chance to work with
him.
Other than that the condition in the workplace at a place Andrea working the
situation was so rushing. This happen because of the attitude of their boss who aspect her
worker to do their job in a blink of eye and this situation Miranda Priestly doesn’t give
especially for her two Emily (Miranda’s assistant) a space to rest. From this tight
schedule it is also affect the relation between Andrea and her family.
Communication
When the first Andrea start her work at the Runways company, the first assistant
of Miranda Priestly told Andrea what she need and cannot do at the workplace. She also
told and warn Andrea about her outfit even Andrea doesn’t really care on what she said to
her. Moment when the first assistant of Miranda Priestly told to her about their job Emily
doesn’t speak nicely to Andrea and this cause Andrea not to feel comfortable with her.
Other than that Emily always seems to not support Andrea in finishing her job. This
matter impact the relationship between Andrea and Emily.
On the issue of communication, Miranda Priestly that acts as the boss at the
Runway Fashion Magazine also lack in communication to her two assistant. Miranda
always instruct her assistant event the task not in the list on what they should do. Also
Miranda also not give a clear direction when she order her two assistant to perform a job.
From the movie Miranda always giving random order and there is no clear instruction on
the order. This cause Andrea and Emily having a problem completing their job. The way
Miranda talk to her worker made them to lost opportunity to making a decision.
Motivation In A Workplace
Working in an organization need you to focus on your job and do your job
perfectly. As a result your boss will be pleased to working with you. In a Runway
company Miranda never gives credit to Emily and Andre even when they are performing
their job perfectly. On the vice verse, when Emily or Andrea cannot finish their job
Miranda will be so mad at them and will give an ubsurd order to them.
Focus on Emily who eager to go to Paris with Miranda for the fashin week. Emily
working hard on his body to look good and keep working hard to gain the trust of her
boss. Attend the fashion show was all his focus on the entire time. When Andrea told
Emily that Miranda Choose him to go to paris with her, Emily was so bad sad and said to
Andrea that she should not said ‘yes’ when Miranda ask her to go with her.
As for Andrea, even Miranda never give her credit about the perfect job that she
has done he never feel said and mad toward her boss but it give more motivation to
Andrea to show to her boss that she can be a good employee to her. At the start of this
movie, Andrea willing to working at the Runways was only because she want to gain a
professional experience.
Stress Problem
Working at a place where the job need to be finish immediately is not something
all people can do. Because of the attitude of Miranda Priestly that wanted her workers to
faster on doing their job it finally cause a stress problem towards her worker this include
Emily and Andrea that having far more stress situation then other worker at the Runway.
As for Emily and Andrea, Miranda always put her assistant under a high pressure as she
asking a lot of stuff to be done at the same time.
In the movie when Emily instructed by Miranda to doing a lot of stuff she with
recklessness crossing the road and accidently hit by a car. For Andrea when she finally
manage to get Miranda attention she was told to go to her house to put several task and
she accidently hear the conversation between Miranda and her husband at that time
Miranda found out and badly mad to her. This cause Andrea been told to do an
impossible task and made Andrea almost give up her position at the Runway.
Organizational Behavior Study based On The Movie
Based on the definition give by the psychological expert name Montreal and Joe
Kelly, organizational behavior is a systematic study of the progress of the organization.
Related to the movie that been analys the issue that been identified related to the study of
organizational behavior. This is because on the issue that be discuss above the
personality, communication, motivation and stress issue was related to the success of an
individual the organization.
In a study of organizational behavior personality play an important role to
produce a condusive working place. Effectiveness of one individual will affect other
individual. In the relationship between personal it can produce and forming efficiency
between personal. As we can see from the acts of Miranda Priestly to his workers. Even
the interaction between her and her workers was a bit hard and pushing the result of
accomplishment was extraordinary when the Runway Company can maintain its
achievement.
Related to the stress issue. In organization behavior study the productivity and a
quality are related to each other. The stress problem can reduce the quality and
productivity of an organization because form this problem workers will tend to lost their
focus in doing their task. If this problem continuously happen in a period of time it will
bring negative impact to individual and organization.
Communication is important at the workplace because from this communication,
organization member can interact to each other on how to overcome a problem that occur
in a workplace. The lack of communication will produce a lot of problem in an
organization. Communication can act as a medium to send a motivation to someone.
Through a good communication someone can show to other what are the act that need to
be do in order to improve skill and maintain performance.
In the movie ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ it show us that behavior plays an important
role in influence the organization goal and individual goal. Each member in an
organization influence by each other and the response that we give are the result of our
self management.
Sugesstion To Minimize The Problem
In a communication issue, the way we communicate to other can result a different
impact to other individual. In this movie the way of the Miranda communicate has cause
uncertainty to his worker on performing their task. Same with the communication
between Emily to Andre who communicate unpolitely and caused a problem. In other to
minimize this problem someone should communicate politely and give a clear instruction
to other to easy them doing their work.
In a motivational issue, as a leader we should keep motivate our worker to
encourage them to do their job efficiently. Unlike the act of Miranda Priestly who never
give a credit toward his workers. Giving motivation can produce a good relationship
between a leader and a worker. As a leader or as a experienced worker, we should guide a
new worker in our organization in performing their job. We also can provide a job
training at least week to make sure they can do their job perfectly.
In order the avoid the case like Andrea Sach who are unable doing her task
perfectly the leader should provide a clear organizational need and priorities and avoid
asking for a private need in an organization. This will assure that the worker are threat
fairly. When we look at Marinda who wanted her assistant to do a private need such as
preparing a food for her it cost her to lost respect from their assistant even they never said
it.
In handling a stress problem, worker can discussing their problem to their leader
about their job and the leader should care of their employer because the employee role
important to assure success in anorganization. Other than tha in handling the stress issue
the imployee can take a rest or a leave to clear their mind so that he can focus on the next
day he come to work.
Conclusion
Basically knowledge in organization behavior can help individual with the
understanding on various type of factor and causes that can affect the organization or
individual. To produce a better environment no matter in what condition it is someone
behavior should be good and spared from the negative action that can harm to
themselves. Working in an organization need a support from every member of
organization. Act of a group member and a leader in an organization will be equally
important as both of this party are relaying on each other. It is the role of the management
to create a work culture and structure that allows the worker to contribute their best work
to the organization while allowing them to achieve personal profit and satisfaction at the
same time.
