responsibilities are working on Win back &Retention of TOS/POS customer, Collection by
Banks & Funds Transfer, Region wise Billing Vs. Collection Analysis, worked on different

Achievements & ARPU) Work on SAP(parking, posting, payment and cheques),Customer
dealing and to resolve their problems, Non punching cases report, Nonpaying customer
verification, Work on billing and customer care system.During my internship, I have analyzed
that there are some problems of the PTCL sometimes supervisor wants irrelevant reports from
the employees, different offices do not use the similar format in reports and some employees
have the issue of low morale, wired connections of PTCL are in open air, not protected with
pipelines, lower level employees are not invited in the meetings and seminars etc. Threats to
PTCL are from internet providing companies and cellular companies. Some of the
recommendations for PTCL are that Management should give more importance to customer
retention, delight and satisfaction, in finance department PTCL should develop more training
programs to educate and motivate the employees, in finance department supervisor should
demand relevant reports to save employees from over burden.

ORGANIZATIONAL/DEPARTMENTAL/BRANCH ANALYSIS:

Internal potency:

I think PTCL has good vision they are thinking to be the leading Information and
Communication technology service provider in the region but they can aim even bigger by going
towards other continents. Their strategy is to increase the level of customer satisfaction and also
maximizing the shareholder value. According to me they have excellent strategy but sometimes
they fail to fulfill the level of satisfaction of its customers because of many reasons such as by
not or late responding to customer queries in this way they lose customers. It is the oldest and
largest telecommunication company in Pakistan and has the largest infrastructure and operational
network in the country that gives it an edge on other related companies. It has nationwide reach
so it can operate in areas where its competitors can’t. PTCL’s leadership is committed towards
bringing innovation and increasing the number of its customers. In June, Pakistan
Telecommunications Company Limited (PTCL) has structured a special two day ‘Leadership
Conference’ for its senior management. Through well targeted and selected development plans,
the focus of this program is to develop a strong unique leadership brand for PTCL which further
enhances the company’s leadership abilities with the strategic business vision of PTCL.  In this
conference PTCL’s Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) HR, Syed Mazhar Hussain said that
“The ‘Leadership Excellence Program’, is designed internally by HR based on our company’s
unique perspective to further develop and refine a distinctive PTCL leadership brand.”This
leadership conference has given a distinctive platform where accomplished industry experts,
opinion makers, top trainers, and business leaders shared their, success stories and experiences.
The significance of professional and dedicated workforce, necessary to deliver quality products
14

and services to the customers, PTCL took variety of plans to prepare its workforce to meet
present and future business challenges.

The above mentioned Leadership Excellence Program, a high-impact top leadership

developmental program was a one such initiative. PTCL’s top management layers took part in
this program with the plan to develop the overall Leadership umbrella of PTCL. Future Leaders
Program, was another program launched for the junior and middle level managers. This initiative
is intended at developing a strong leadership pipeline, for efficiently and effectively meeting the
strategic business requirements of the organization. PTCL also finished a summer internship
program viz. Experia Summer Program 2013 designed
for generating an effective value chain by constructing the picture of PTCL as an company of
choice, recognizing future key talent and for strengthening university linkages. To improve the
workforce’ engagement level, ‘PTCL’s Got Talent’ program designed by PTCL through which
the workers across the nation were encouraged to display their aesthetic abilities by taking part in
a variety of artistic competitions. A high number of staff has taken part in the program. So by
seeing this it can be stated that PTCL’s leadership is committed to enhance the level of its
present and upcoming employees. Products that are offered by PTCL are up to date and
according to the need of time. PTCL is taking major initiatives to alter operational support
systems and business to align with the evolving and changing business needs with the key
objectives to further shrink the Time to Market (TTM) for the launching of new products,
bundled packages and services and to decrease the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) through
convergence and consolidation and thus increasing the operational efficiency. If you see the
financial performance of PTCL. The PTCL Group revenue of Rs. 65.6 billion for the half year
ended 30th June 2013. The revenue during this period is increased by 5% compared to the earlier
six months period. Out of these revenues, the revenues got by PTCL are of Rs. 40.1 billion
recorded a boost of 8% largely due to healthy growth in Broadband segment. At the movement
PTCL is giving many products such as the facility of landline, PTCL is also giving the facility of
fixed line service through its countrywide CDMA based WLL (Wireless Local Loop) network,
under the brand name VFone. In the segment of internet, PTCL is providing the facility of
broadband through FTTC& copper wire and PTCL is also giving wireless broadband with the
15

name of Evo. PTCL has also launched a 3G tab. In the cellular industry, Ufone is a completely
owned subsidiary of PTCL which is the second largest cellular company in Pakistan .In addition
to these, PTCL is also offering commercial HD TV services based on IPTV under the brand
name of Smart TV. PTCL has also a wide-ranging network of submarine cables that comprise of
I-ME-WE, SEA-ME-WE-3; SEA-ME-WE-4.PTCL is also giving the facility of Satellite
communication. So PTCL is going well with the fast moving technology.

Internal deficiencies:

 In Finance department sometimes supervisor wants irrelevant reports from the

employees.
 Different finance offices do not use the similar format of reports.
 Some employees have low morale
 The method of promotion of PTCL is on the bases of seniority and a good number of the
senior level employees get to these positions because they worked for PTCL for a long
period of time but these employees are lacking the skills required for the upper level.
 Wired connections of PTCL are in open air, not protected with pipelines which usually
become disconnected in rains and storms. Mainline DPS and Cabins of PTCL are also not
secure.
 Due to any reason when a line is disengaged in the areas out of main cities it requires
weeks to join again because you cannot get a technician even after entering the complain
because telephonic complaint will rarely do what you want,so for making complaints
customers require to go to the offices physically. So I can conclude from the above
scenario that PTCL is not quick and efficient in areas that are away from the main city
regarding customer queries.
 Some of the senior people working in the department of finance have not sufficient
information of computer applications and there is no proper training program for them.
 Between or among different departments there is lack of coordination.
 Lower level employees are not invited in the meetings and seminars.
16

External opportunities:

There are many external opportunities for PTCL to flourish which are as follows:
 The market size is quite massive so PTCL can capture more market in order to increase
its market share means making technology reachable to every individual in the country.
 PTCL can launch training programs for employees so that can do their work efficiently.
 PTCL can employ latest technologies to attract new customers.
 In stock market PTCL has good reputation. So PTCL can search for good investors for
investment.
 Can develop innovative, customized and new products by doing this its product line will
increase which can attract customers.
 PTCL can restructure its organizational hierarchy so the management can plan and
implement new ideas to improve overall services.
 PTCL can appoint competent marketers that can adopt aggressive marketing strategies to
promote presented services and give hard time to opponents.
 PTCL can engage in joint ventures with other telecommunication groups for initiating
new products and services.
 PTCL can appoint technical staff in particular areas e.g. for DSL problems with the
intention of increasing customer satisfaction.

 PTCL has the huge opportunity to increase the market of Wireless local loop (WLL)
which is the substitute of landline phone lines through Wireless local loop base
subscribers.
 PTCL can increase its business extensively by discovering new segments through
properly segmenting the market.

PTCL has a huge network stretched all over Pakistan. With a trained workforce and
experience in the area of telecommunications, PTCL has a grand chance to do well in the
existing scenario under the Management of Etisalat.
17

THREATS:

The boost in the intensity of rivalry greatly influenced the cost of competition as well as prices.
The expenditure of sales and advertising has become very high and a constant reduction in the
price has been noticed due to the price war. The following are the competitors or threats to
PTCL.
1. Direct competitors includes Nayatel, Wateen and Wi-tribe,etc.
 Wi-tribe is a threat to PTCL because it is intended exactly at enhancing online entrée in
emerging markets together for businesses and personal users, making a community with
advantages for all. Their method of approaching consumers, making sure that they are
enjoying services in accordance with their expectations. Offering a different range of
services and products, Wi-tribe believes in empowering clients with options that suit their
dynamic way of life.
 NayaTel (Pvt) Ltd. (NTL) is a sister concern of Micronet Broadband (Pvt) Ltd. (MBL),
the company that began first broadband service in July 2002 in Pakistan. Leveraging its
loaded experience and expertise of broadband, MBL team launched NTL South Asia's
first fiber to the user (FTTU)/ fiber to the home (FTTH)/ network in September 2006 in
Islamabad. Nayatel's network offers modern telephony, ultra broadband Internet, and
digital video services to home users and businesses. Nayatel’s Vision is
to become a role model of trust, add value to the society and set highest standards of
quality. It is also a threat for PTCL because of its unique services.
 Wateen started its operations in 2007 in Pakistan, with the deployment of the largest fiber
optic network in the country. Additionally, Wateen is the world’s earliest company to
commercially roll out on a nationwide scale a WiMAX network. At present Wateen
services over 250,000 WiMAX subscribers, provides data services and enterprise
solutions to more than 200 leading organizations. Their vision is to empower and enable
every child, man and woman in Pakistan through leading edge services and technology
thereby transforming their lives. It is a competitor of PTCL.
18

2. All cellular companies are its indirect competitors.

 Mobilink is Pakistan’s leading supplier of data and voice services, bringing more people
together through product innovation and service excellence. Mobilink has more than 36
million subscribers. Mobilink’s human resource is equipped with advanced technology.
Mobilink is excited to present the best services to its customers, to give a flexible and
dynamic working environment for its active employees and to bring worth to its
shareholders.
 Telenor Pakistan is 100% owned by the Telenor Group, an international supplier of high
quality data, content, voice and communication services in twelve markets across Asia
and Europe. In 2004 it acquired a GSM license and on March 15, 2005 started its
commercial operations. Telenor Pakistan crossed the active subscriber base of 30 million
in October 2012 and retained its spot as the Pakistan's second largest mobile operator.

 Warid Telecom is a 100% owned business of the Abu Dhabi Group and provides at over
7,000 destinations its high-tech telecommunication services in Pakistan. In Pakistan
Warid began its cellular services in May 2005. As an organization, Warid prides itself in
being approachable, constantly innovating and contemporary. With accomplishments
ranging from most loved youth & prepaid brands, nationwide coverage, having one of the
largest postpaid bases and international roaming, Warid Telecom's collection of value
added services makes communication enjoyable and effective.
 China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak) with the brand name "Zong" is working in Pakistan. The
opening international step for China Mobile, Zong plans at touching the lives of all
Pakistanis. They serve to empower and inspire the people of Pakistan with modern
technology that runs with today's fast evolving culture. So all these cellular companies
are also a threat for PTCL.
3. Ability to retain skilled Professionals is also a threat to PTCL.
19

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. All the finance offices must use the same format of reports.
2. Management of PTCL should give more importance to customer retention, delight and
satisfaction.
3. Only those people should be promoted to the upper level who has desired skills.
4. Mainline DPS and Cabins of PTCL should be made secured.
5. Wired connections of PTCL are in open air, so they should be protected.
6. PTCL revenues may decline due to entrance of other competitors in the country, so the
management must take special careful measures in advance to face this competitive
environment.
7. In finance department supervisor should demand relevant reports to save employees from
over burden.
8. Development of human resource is a basic component in almost every organization. In
PTCL this department is not working up to the mark. So PTCL should develop more
training programs to educate the employees; this will help them to increase their
efficiency. By doing this customers can save their time by not going physically to PTCL
offices for making complaints
9. Special efforts should be made to increase the morale of employees e.g. by giving
bonuses, by encouraging their efforts or motivating them etc.
10. All the finance related offices must be interconnected.
11. Senior employees must be updated with latest techniques of finance. These people should
be educated enough that they should have computer related knowledge. There must be
suitable training programs regarding computer skills.
12. With top management, lower level employees should also be invited in the meetings and
seminars so that they can be able to give their opinions and suggestions. These opinions
and suggestions can benefit the organization and for taking any decision they should take
lower management in confidence.
20

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

I have finished my internship with PTCL. Through this Internship I have accomplished many
things. This Internship has given me experience that what is practical or professional life in real.
By doing this internship, I can now better understand where my interests and skills suits best. I
have also seen the management style and other aspects of a workplace. If I see from other aspect
than I have found that this internship has given me skills and experience that will enhance my
resume because before that I had no other work experience and I hope that employers will attract
in making a hiring decision because employers want some kind of experience when taking a
hiring decision, practical experience makes this decision lot easier for a employer than a degree
alone. As you know that Internships are a brilliant opportunity to make professional connections.
Through the internship I have made some kind of professional connections and if I approach
PTCL for a job, then there is a strong chance that they would hire me because I have spend time
with them in a professional setting and became known to their work and also they are familiar
with my abilities, attitude and level of performance. Whether it’s how to write a brief email,
shake a hand or answer a telephone there is a professional way to do it. Moreover, skills like
teamwork, communication, work ethic and professional etiquette can only be observed through
actual experience. By working in a professional environment as an intern, I had the opportunity
to observe how staff members of the organization act on these situations. In my internship I have
learned through feedback and correction given by my supervisor Internship is a chance to check
the skills you developed in school, college and university life. Similarly by making use of my
skills in the internship, I got an idea of my strengths and weaknesses and now I can develop my
weak points into my strengths. In this I can improve my chances of availing a job. When students
are studying in universities sometimes they don’t know exactly the direction of their careers.
When they experience the internship they can know that a particular field is right for them or not.
If they enjoy the internship and get some success, it can set the direction for their entire career
and if they find that they don’t like the area than they can stop themselves entering that career
and can choose some other field or career at the earlier stage. Through the internship I came to
know the direction of my career to some extent. So one can consider internship as career
21

experiment. Internship will help you experience the culture of a particular organization which
will help you if you able to find job in that company. Through the internship I have experienced
the culture and environment of PTCL which can help me in future if I would able to find a job in
PTCL. By doing my internship, I have learned new skills. For example, I have learned short cuts
on keyword and I worked excel etc. So internship is a grand source of adding to your skills and
abilities. I liked all the responsibilities and duties given to me in the internship. Frankly I am
telling that, in the internship I have noticed that a small amount of theoretical knowledge gleaned
from the courses was applied in my internship. Yes this internship was destined to impact my
career advancement which I have discussed above. In the end I can say that this internship has
polished my skills and abilities.
