Hispida) On Termites

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of Kayos (Dioscorea hispida) extract in killing termites. Specifically, it will measure the mortality rate of termites 24 hours after being sprayed with pure Kayos tuber extract. The researcher hypothesizes that there will be no significant difference in mortality rates between termites sprayed with the extract. If proven effective, the Kayos extract could be used as a natural, less chemical-based termite extermination method, benefiting homeowners, manufacturers, and future researchers. The study will focus only on mortality rates using spray application and collect raw materials from the local environment.

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Background of the Study

Statement of the Problem

Generally, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of Kayos (Dioscorea

hispida) on termites.

Specifically, this study will answer the following questions:

1. What is the termiticidal effect of pure Discorea hispida tubers extract on working

termites in terms of mortality rate 24 hours after application?

2. Is there a significant difference on the mortality rate of termites as affected by

Kayos extract, 24 hours after application?

Hypothesis:

There is no significant difference on the mortality rate of termites as affected by

Kayos extract, 24 hours after application.

Significance of the Study

The result of this study will be beneficial to the following:

Home owners. The result of this study will give them idea on how to

exterminate termites in their houses that cause a lot of damages especially on their

wood furnitures and books.

Manufacturers. The result of this study can be their basis in creating a

new product that is less in chemical and will help them increase their profit.

Future researchers. This study will help them gain more knowledge and

will lead them for further study and experimentation.

Scope and Limitations

This study will focus only on the mortality rate of the termites. There are several

types of extermination methods but the researchers will only focus on the use of spray.

The raw materials needed will be collected from the surrounding environment. The

information regarding the development of this study will be primarily collected from the

internet, specifically from agriculture, entomology- related and pest control websites.

Review of Related Literature

Termites

A termite is a soft, white insects living in groups which causes a serious structural

damages to the infrastructures that they eat (Merriam Webster, 2018). They are also

known as the “silent destroyers” because of their ability to damage infrastructures

without being detected immediately (National Pest Management Association, 2018),

(Orbin, 2018).

Termites are often confused to ants (Pestwiki,2018). There are several types of

termites which often depend on where they live and the types of food (wood) that they

eat. Regardless to their species, they all are a big concern to home owners especially

when they have a huge size of colonies.
