FUNCTIONS OF MASS MEDIA
Mass media is any form of communication that reaches a large public
audience, whether written, broadcast, or spoken. Television, radio, movies,
drama, advertising, the Internet, newspapers, and so on are all examples of mass
media. Nowadays, mass media has played an essential role in people’s daily life.
One key characteristic of mass media is providing people with information,
with events that they would otherwise have known little about it. We all need a
piece of information to satisfy our curiosity, have a better understanding of what’s
happening around us. With the help of media such as newspapers, the Internet, we
can easily approach news timely, accurately. During the Covid-19 pandemic, we
could see how important information has played and the role of mass media
throughout that time. According to the survey has been conducted by the online
survey through Google spreadsheets in India that the use of the internet and tv
news increased during the lockdown and the use of newspapers radio and
magazines declined significantly. The anxiety due to Covid-related news through
mass media was reported highest (27.3%) in the 40-49 years age group and
lowest (14.49%) in the 20-29 age group. About 43.18% of people of 30-39 years
of age group developed fear, and 28% of 50-59 age groups felt panic due to
Covid-related news in media. It has been found that the use of social media is

Another key characteristic of mass communication is that cultural
transmission. This refers to the media’s ability to the diversity of cultures around
the world, the different standards, laws, and values that exist in a society, and
ensure their transmission from generation to generation. In general, tv programs
represent the culture in which they are transmitted and foster awareness of
society’s cultural heritage. Children’s television shows are intended to model
good behavior and moral values that they will learn by watching.
Last but not least, entertainment is one of the most function of mass media.
This important function of mass media refers to the ability of the media to help
people relax and create a way to get away from the stresses of daily life. The
entertainment function of mass communication has both positive and negative
effects. At this time, people have various ways to entertainment and social media
is the most popular choice for everyone. 3.96 billion people currently use social
media worldwide, up almost double from 2.07 billion in 2015. Globally, the
average time a person spends on social media a day is 2 hours 24 minutes.

In conclusion, the media serves a wide variety of functions or roles in society
and they have a significant impact on our lives. Mass communication has an
impact on how we spend our time and money, what we see and hear. It aids in the
information of our values, opinions, and behaviors.
