1. Transport is the back bone of country’s economy. Give two reasons to support the
statement.
(i) Transportation facilitates utilization of natural resources lying unutilized in the
hills, forests and mines.
(ii) It helps in the process of industrialization and urbanization.
2. Give two reasons for the “Means of transport” being called the lifelines of a nation’s
economy.
(i) Means of transport provide seamless movement of goods and people and thus
facilitate various economic activities.
(ii) Because of transport raw materials reach the factory and finished products reach
to the consumer. Agriculture also depends on transportation.
3. Give two ways in which rail transport is useful for the people of India.
(i) Lakhs of skilled and unskilled people are employed in operating the railway.
(ii) Railways have increased the mobility of labour and capital, which has contributed
to the rapid industrialization of the country.
4. What is the importance of Roadways in India? Give two reasons
(i) Roadways are ideal for short distances as through it every village and hamlet can
be reached
(ii) It transports people and goods quickly and easily.
(iii) It provides door to door services
5. Mention two reasons why more people use railways rather than airways.
More people travel by railways than by airways because
 Airways are expensive

North rivers flow over flat terrain, where as Deccan rivers flow over uneven land.

economic development of the country.
Golden Quadrilateral is the largest super Highway project in India that connects India's
four biggest metropolitan cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai.
Two ways in which it will help in the economic development of the country –
 Establishing faster transport networks between major cities and ports to save time.
 Providing fast and smooth movement of products and people with in India.
 Developing industries and creating job opportunities in smaller towns through
access to markets.

 Depends on weather conditions.


 Slow means of transport.
 Can cause sea sickness.
 Restricted means of transport, can only be possible where rivers are navigable

inconvenience to the passengers.

Advantages

Disadvantages
 Train travel can be very long and tedious, especially when compared to air travel.
 Trains which run on coal produce lot of air and noise pollution.
