Position Paper for Academic Freeze

As we may all know, the country is currently under a pandemic which is caused by COVID-19.
And because of that, a lot of people, especially students, worried about the upcoming school year
2020-2021. Students demand an academic freeze for the school year 2020-2021 because of the
current situation the country is in. As for me, I agree to have an academic freeze for this school
year.

Academic freeze refers to the cancellation of formal schooling amid the COVID-19 crisis in the
country. The youth, especially students, are urging the government and the Department of
Education (DepEd) to cancel the school year 2020-2021 on both public and private schools due
to the challenges that the learners may face. Not only the learners will face challenges but also
the teachers because of the new method of learning. Having an academic freeze this school year
is a must. It is a must because in the new method of learning which is through online, there are a
lot of things that are needed for you to be able to comply. One of them is to have your gadgets
for the online classes. It may be cell phones, laptops or computers. Not all of the students can
afford those things especially during a pandemic. You also need to have a stable internet
connection to be able to comply with your classes online. Knowing that the country doesn’t
really have the fastest internet connection makes it hard.

There’s an option where you can have modules instead of online classes. That may be applicable
to those who are not privileged enough to comply with the things for the online classes. Having
to choose that method of learning means your parents have to go out of your house to collect the
modules from your schools. This is giving them the risk of getting the virus. Yes some schools
deliver the modules to you but having the modules delivered to you may cost you the delivery
fee. If you do have the money to pay for the delivery fee then good. Having modules is good for
those who aren’t privileged but are you sure that you can learn something just by having those
modules?

You might say that why don’t they just not enroll for the school year. Yes they can do that but
the fact that you will be left behind if you won’t be able to enroll this school year is scary. The
idea of getting academically left behind is a mental and emotional pressure that the students are
doing their best to avoid. I even see some posts of the students on social media doing everything
they can to be able to earn money for their classes. Some even stooped so low to sell their nudes
just to get money.

The Department of Education really needs to consider having the academic freeze for the school
year 2020-2021.A lot of students, also parents, are having problems regarding the new methods
of learning. Not all of the students can afford getting gadgets and paying for the internet that is
very much needed for the online classes. Therefore I conclude that we should have an academic
freeze for this school year.
