Activity No. 1

1. List down title/s of the stories local and abroad for the following genre.
a. Fable- “Why Dog Wag Their Tails” and “Why Anansi Has Eight Thin Legs”
b. Parable- “Prodigal Son” and “The Good Samaritan”
c. Novel- “Noli Me Tangere” and “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”
d. Short stories- “We Filipinos are Mild Drinkers” and “The Gift of the Magi”

2. Name the character in each and identify the protagonist and antagonist.
a. The characters in “Why Dog Wag Their Tails” are the dog and cat. The cat is the protagonist
and the dog is the antagonist. Next story is “Why Anansi Has Eight Thin Legs” and its
characters are Anansi, Rabbit, and Hog. The protagonist and antagonist is Anansi because he
is the one who put himself in danger.
b. The characters in the first story are the father and his two sons. The protagonist is the father and
oldest son while the antagonist is the young son. On the second story, the characters are
wounded man, Jewish priest, Levite and the Samaritan. The protagonist in the story are the
wounded man and the Samaritan while Jewish priest and Levite are antagonists.
c. The characters in “Noli Me Tangere” are Juan Crisostomo Ibarra, Maria Clara, Elias, Don Rafael
Ibarra, Crispin, Basillo, Pilosopo Tasyo, Sisa, Tinyente Guevara, Kapitana Maria, Donya Pia, Tiya
Isabel, Tarsilo , Bruno, Kapitan Tiyago, Padre Damaso, Padre Salvi, Alperes, Donya Victorina,
Donya Consulacion, Don Teburcio de Espadaña, Linares, Lucas, Don Saturino, Mang Pablo and
Padre Sibyla. The protagonists are Juan Crisostomo Ibarra and Maria Clara while the antagonists
are Padre Damaso, Padre Salvi, Alperes, Donya Victorina, Donya Consulacion, Don Teburcio de
Espadaña, Linares, Lucas, Don Saturino, Mang Pablo and Padre Sibyla, while the rests are minor
characters. The characters of “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” are Huckleberry Finn, Jim,
Tom Sawyer and Pap Finn. The protagonists are Huckleberry Finn, Jim and Tom Sawyer while
the antagonist is Pap Finn.
d. The characters in the short story entitled “We Filipinos are Mild Drinkers” are farmer, Joe, mother,
people living in the barrio and friends of the soldier. They are also the protagonists and there is no
antagonist. It is because in the story, they didn’t encountered any conflict. The main characters in
“The Gift of the Magi” are Della and Jim Dillingham Young. Della is the protagonist and the
antagonist is lack of money.

3. Settings of the story.


a. The setting of the first story is in the river. In this river, the dog lost the magic ring. The next
story’s setting is the village. This village is Anansi’s together with his friends where they
share their foods together.
b. The setting in “The Prodigal Son” is father’s house and bar. The bar is the place where his
young son spent all of his inherited money and the father’s house is where they had a feast
when the young son returned. While on the next story’s setting is Jerusalem where a man
was beaten until the Samaritan helped him.
c. The setting of “Noli Me Tangere” is 19th century, during Spanish colonization. The settings
on the next novel are small town of St. Petersburg, Missouri, which Twain based on his
hometown, Hannibal, Missouri. After meeting up on Jackson’s Island, Huck and Jim set off
along the Mississippi River and passthrough Illinois, Kentucky, and Arkansas.
d. The setting of the “We Filipinos are Mild Drinkers” is on the barrio where they drink
Lambanog. The short story “Gift of the Magi is on New York City.
