Pharmacology Ors

ORS is an oral rehydration solution used to maintain electrolyte and fluid balance in patients experiencing vomiting, diarrhea, burns, surgery or shock. It contains sodium chloride, potassium chloride, trisodium citrate, and glucose dissolved in water at a total osmolarity of 245 mOsm/L. The solution is prepared by dissolving the packet contents in 100ml of boiled and cooled water. A homemade ORS can be prepared with 6 teaspoons of sugar, 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and 1 liter of boiled drinking water. Super ORS contains additional ingredients like sodium bicarbonate and is used to replace fluids and minerals lost from diarrhea and vomiting during dehydration.
