POSTMODERNITY

By: Andro Louis M. Rulona

Let us look at postmodernity not as a concept, but rather an era or epoch. So how can we
say that we are in this epoch? Like other periods or epoch, we can determine that we are already
at the postmodernity through its characteristics. Now, what are the characteristics of
postmodernity? Accordingly, this epoch has three characteristics; what are these characteristics?
These are fragmentation, playful autonomy, and being hardheaded. First, fragmentation means
that people under this epoch are more concern on their own personhood, which leads to dividing
everyone, especially it shows its big effect on the relationship of the family. Second, playful
autonomy indicates that people in the community or society are more concern about their
authority towards themselves. People don’t like to be corrected or others will interrupt them and
this attitude can lead to individualism. Lastly, being hard-headed, most people of today don’t
listen, they want to do things for what they think is right or good. They often neglect the
suggestions and comments of others for the betterment of their work and character.
What are the other things in postmodernity era? Postmodernity beside of its
characteristics is also known for its many cultures. What are these cultures? There are four
cultures present in this era: (a) National Culture, (b) Professional or Congressional Culture, (c)
Global Culture, and (d) Technological or Radiated Culture. National culture is the kind of culture
which shows the set of norms, behaviors, beliefs, customs, and values shared by the population
of a sovereign nation. Also refers to specific characteristics such as language, religion, ethnic and
racial identity, and cultural history and traditions.13 Ibid., IGI Global
