and horror.

But, when tragedy strikes, Emilia sees the best in those around her, having seen the worst of humanity. She
tumbles into something she can't, or won't, step away from.

My legs brushed against my thick red wool skirt as I swing them back and forth, pulled my black
overcoat around me tighter as I sit on a bench in a corner of the small room. I had been in a
refugee house out of the entire month, and it surprised me when I got called to Mr. Presley’s
office today.

There were 6 kids sitting in the room as well.

Two boys were whispering into each other’s ears. They had the same unkempt dark hair and
eyes.

A girl was crying onto her knees, and next to her an older boy comforting her. I can only assume
they are family.

A young woman was staring at the wall the whole time.

A few chairs down, a skinny, brown-haired boy was looking at me with his blue eyes. I turned
my green ones away instantly.

A few minutes later, Mr. Presley came out of his office. “Bellemore and Portman.” he called.

The boy and I got up and walked towards the door. Mr Presley opened the door and led us inside
the room.

A lady in her mid-thirties was standing and smiling at us. She was a distinguished woman with
green eyes and dark hair that was pinned atop her head in a tidy bun. She was wearing a high
collared blouse that was buttoned tightly at her throat, and a long layered skirt.

“Emilia Bellemore?” she asked.

“Yes, Miss….?” I replied.

“Miss Peregrine.” Her presence seemed to loom over me invitingly, the familiar feeling of being
close to a ymbryne. She gestured to the boy. “Abraham Portman?”

The boy beside me nodded.

The sound of clearing throat ended our quick conversation. We all turned to see a pudgy man
behind a desk.

“Ah, Mr. Presley. These are the two children, I presume?” Miss Peregrine asked.

“Yes,” he replied, and talked about the war and the children. We heard it many times before. I
watched the clock in the room's corner in boredom. The Portman boy walked around the room,
looking at the posters on the wall, the books rested on top of the table. Our eyes met. I felt mine
burn. I took a step back and closed my eyes. No one in the room seemed to notice, no one but the
boy.

“Are you alright?” He mouthed.

“Y-yes, I —” I uttered, my voice shaking. “I’m fine.”

Miss Peregrine and Mr Presley had stopped talking and were watching us.
Mr Presley cleared his throat. “Children, you are goin’ with Miss Peregrine to a small island in
Wales. Say goodbye to your ol’ house.”

While I was happy to finally get a home, this house—with its wallpaper peeling, its broken
windows and all the kids I got to be with—has been my only sanctuary and I hesitated to leave,
but thought better of it.
