TITLE OF ACTIVITY: Pure Substance: Compound
LEARNING TARGET/S: Cite common compound that can be found at home
REFERENCE/S (Author, Title, Pages): Exploring Life Through Science 7, Pavico,JM. F., Faraon,
G. D., Ramos, AM. M., Bayquen, A. V., Silverio, A. A., &
Ramos, JD. A.
CONCEPT NOTE:
What makes a compound different from elements? From the previous lesson, you
learned that elements cannot be broken down into simpler components. In contrast,
COMPOUNDS can be chemically separated into their component elements; it is made up of
two or more elements.
Common example of compound that we use in everyday life
SALT WATER
Chemical Symbol: NaCl Chemical Symbol: H2O
Elements: Sodium & Elements: Hydrogen &
Chlorine Oxygen
EXERCISE:
Cite common compound that can be found at home and write the chemical
symbol of each compound. (Erasure means wrong)
“Compounds that
can be found at
home”

TITLE OF ACTIVITY: Compound: Chemical Symbol & Element
LEARNING TARGET/S: Identify the elements and proportion of element in a compound
REFERENCE/S(Author, Title, Pages): Exploring Life Through Science 7, Pavico,JM. F., Faraon, G. D.,
Ramos, AM. M., Bayquen, A. V., Silverio, A. A., & Ramos, JD. A.
CONCEPT NOTE:
Chemists represent compounds using the formulas based on the symbols of the
elements in the compound. A chemical formula shows the fixed proportion of the
element in the compound.
For example:
CHEMICAL
COMPOUND ELEMENT PROPORTION
SYMBOL
Water Hydrogen & Oxygen 2:1
Salt Sodium & Chlourine 1:1
EXERCISE
Complete the table by giving the Elements and proportion of the following
compound.
CHEMICAL
COMPOUND ELEMENTS PROPORTION
FORMULA
Example:
SALT NaCl Sodium & Chlourine 1:1
1. Carbon Dioxide
2. Carbon Monoxide
3. Silicon Dioxide
4. Dinitrogen Trioxide
5. Iodine dichloride

TITLE OF ACTIVITY: Compound: Acid, Base and Salt
LEARNING TARGET/S: Identify acid, base and salt base on the given properties
REFERENCE/S (Author, Title, Pages): Exploring Life Through Science 7, Pavico,JM. F., Faraon,
G. D., Ramos, AM. M., Bayquen, A. V., Silverio, A. A., &
Ramos, JD. A.
CONCEPT NOTE:
Compound may be classified as acid, base and salt whose definitions may be operational or
conceptual. Conceptual definitions are based on the behavior of acid and bases as explained by
different theories. Operational definitions or defined based on what we could actually observe in them.
ACID (Ex.: Lemon) • Reacts with base to form salt
The word acid comes from either of BASE (Ex.: Soap)
these Latin words: acidus meaning “sour” or A base is compound that exhibits the
acetum meaning “vinegar” An acid is following properties:
compound that exhibits the following
properties: • has a bitter
• Tastes sour • has a slippery, soapy feeling
• Reacts with some metals • changes red litmus paper to blue
• Changes blue litmus paper (an • reacts with acids to form salt
indicator) to red • very few reacts with metal
SALT - It is a product of the neutralization reaction between an acid and a base. (Ex.: Sodium
Chloride)
EXERCISE:
Identify which of the following is ACID, BASE or SALT. Write on the blank provided.
(Erasure means wrong)
1. Washing powder _____________________
2. Soda _____________________
3. Baking soda _____________________
4. Table salt _____________________
5. Citrus fruit _____________________

TITLE OF ACTIVITY: Handling Acids and Bases
LEARNING TARGET/S: Understand the proper handling of acid and bases
REFERENCE/S (Author, Title, Pages): Exploring Life Through Science 7, Pavico,JM. F., Faraon,
G. D., Ramos, AM. M., Bayquen, A. V., Silverio, A. A., &
Ramos, JD. A.
CONCEPT NOTE:
If you are handling the chemicals in the laboratory you should practice the
following safety tips:
1. Use hand protection (gloves) appropriate for acids or bases.
2. Wear safety glasses or goggles
3. Wear laboratory gown.
4. If an acid or base enters your eyes or comes in contact with any part of your body,
flush the affected part with plenty of water then go to the clinic at once.
5. Dispose these chemicals properly
EXERCISE:
Write T if the statement is true and write F if the statement is false, then
underline the word that makes the statement wrong and write the correct word
in the blank provided after the number to make the statement right.
____________1. When handling acid and base, you should not use gloves for protection.
____________2. It is a must to wear goggles when handling acid and base.
____________3. Acid changes red litmus paper to blue.
____________4. If an acid enters your eyes you will have good eyesight.
____________5. Dispose chemicals the chemical properly even you’re not done yet with it.
