Michael Norton
Michael Norton is a business school professor. He studied how money makes people feel.
Some people believe that having a lot of money makes them happy. For example, many
people think that if they win the lottery, they will be happy. However, many lottery
winners spend too much money and have many debts. They also have problems with their
friends and family who want to share the money. These problems make people unhappy.
This example about lottery winners shows that, “money can't buy happiness.” But is that
always true?
Norton believes that money can buy happiness. Why? He looked at how people behave
with money. Norton asked some university students to spend money on themselves and
some other students to spend money on other people. After the students did this, Norton
asked them about their feelings. The students who spent money on themselves did not feel
unhappy, but they did not feel happier. However, the students who spent money on others
felt happier. Norton tried the same thing all over the world with people of all ages. Each
time, the result was the same—spending money on others improved the happiness of the
giver.
