Part II: Brief Background/Description about the companies
PLDT, Inc. is a Philippine telecommunications, internet, and digital service holdings firm that was
formerly known as the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company. It, along with Globe Telecom and
upstart Dito Tele community, is one of the country's major telecommunications providers. Founded in
1928, it is the Philippines' oldest and largest telecommunications firm in terms of assets and revenues.
Following the merging of four US-owned telephone companies on November 28, 1928, PLDT, Inc.,
formerly the Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, was formed. A typhoon had just decimated
Eastern Visayas, Bicol Peninsula, and Samar when PLDT was founded and obtained the franchise to
construct and operate telephone services in the Philippines on November 28, 1928. It became critical to
be able to communicate with loved ones across the country. The bill that gave rise to PLDT was signed
under this scenario. The goal of the new law was to integrate these "intercom" systems into a unified
nationwide network that would facilitate communication and service delivery to the public, as well as
encourage rural economic growth. The General Telephone and Electronics Corporation sold PLDT to a
group of Filipino businesspeople in 1967. PLDT's common shares were acquired by Philippine
Telecommunications Investment Corporation, Metro Pacific Resources Inc. (all of which are Filipino
affiliates of First Pacific Company), NTT DOCOMO, INC., NTT Communications Corporation, and JG
Summit Group between 1998 and 2011. The Securities and Exchange Commission approved a change of
business name to the existing one on July 29, 2016. PLDT is an incorporated telecommunications service
