SIREN CODES BY CONTROLLER FOR ORDERING ART/MRT IN CASE OF

ACCIDENT

On receipt of message, ordering MRT/ART the hooter, electric siren must be sounded as
below:

S.No. Description Siren Code


1 Accident in Yards, Loco sheds Two long
2 Accident at out station, mainline is clear, ART is Three long
required
3 Accident at outstation, mainline is clear, Three long one short
ART/MRV both are required
4 Accident at outsatation,mainline is blocked, ART Four long
required without MRV
3 Accident at out station, mainline is blocked, Four long one short
ART/MRV both are required

Note:
1. Long hooter duration : 30 seconds
2. Short hooter duration : 5 seconds

1. The target time for turning out ART is 30 minutes is during day and 45 minutes during
night, this must be ensured.

2. The target time for turning out MRV after hearing the Siren is 20 minutes during day
or night.

3. ART/MRV must be inspected monthly by the AMO, SMR, CTFO,ADME along with
the in charge of ART/MRV.

Causes of Derailment:

1. Mechanical failure
2. Traction and braking shock
3. Crew error
4. Bad vehicle riding
5. Defective track
6. Miscellaneous
7. Unknown
8. Error of staff

1. Mechanical Failure:

a) Broken spring
b) Broken suspension member
c) Hot box/journal end off
d) Broken coupling
e) Broken axle
f) Loose wheel or tyre
g) Failure of other part of running gear including displaced bearings.
h) Multiple and others.

2. Traction and Braking Shocks:

a) Inadvertent DSO(Double Signal Operators) or AWS (accident warning Signals)


b) Severe Brake application
c) Snatched buffer locking
d) Braking and subsequent application of power
e) Train marshalling (Light wagons squeezed between heavier ones)
f) Multiple others or unknown.

3. Crew Errors:

Excessive speed
Signals passes at danger
Irregular running through points not controlled by signals
Other errors of drivers (Exceptional cause)
Error of guard
Misunderstanding of Crew.
Restart over catch points, multiple or others.

4. Bad Vehicle Riding:

a) Wheel load distribution affected by vehicle riding characteristics or mismatched


suspension components, but excluding spring effect.
b) Torsional stiffness or twisted under frame
c) Lateral instability (including heating)
d) Weak displaced or mismatched springs
e) Tyre wear
f) Rotational stiffness
g) Bad vertical response
h) Multiple and others.

5. Defective Track:

a) Twist
b) Side cut
c) Vertical misalignment
d) Lateral misalignment(including Buckling)
e) Spread gauge
f) Broken Rail
g) Defective Formation
h) Multiple and others(Defective Switches)

6. Multiple:

Predominant cause

a) Mechanical Failure
b) Traction and Braking shock
c) Crew Error
d) Bad vehicle riding
e) Defective Track
f) Multiple
g) Miscellaneous
h) Unknown
i) Error of other staff and
j) Undecided

7. Miscellaneous:

a) Loco defect
b) Trough catch/trap points
c) Obstruction on track not appeared to staff (Spillage from vehicles)
d) Vandalism other action non-staff (Care on level crossing)
e) Faulty equipment (not covered elsewhere including S&T faults)
f) Displaced or uneven load

8. Unknown Cause, error of others

a) Error of signal man or crossing beeper


b) Error of shunter /PW staff
c) Faulty loading (including non-observance of loading in the truck)
d) Error of driving
e) Colliding of train
f) Obstruction on track due to error of staff.
(Eg: platform trolleys, handling binding chains)
