My Conclusion

The document summarizes the author's 24-week industrial training experience. It describes being trained at 3 different establishments: Ceylon Electricity Board for 8 weeks, LECO for 4 weeks, and Sri Lanka Ports Authority for 12 weeks. At each place, the author was exposed to different areas of electrical systems and gained valuable experience. However, the training periods of only 1 week per placement were too short, and some places lacked knowledgeable staff. Overall, the author believes the industrial training provided important real-world experience that will help in their future engineering career.

Chapter 3 Industrial Training Report

Conclusion

After completing three years as an undergraduate in University of Moratuwa, industrial training

was the first opportunity I got to apply the theories I learnt with the real industry for the real
situations. This also gave me the chance to move with different types of people in the industry.
Having exposed to such situations I was able to obtain lot of experiences which will be definitely
helpful to success my future career as an Engineer.

According to my training schedule I got a rear chance of undergoing training at three

establishments within 24 weeks. Therefore I could gain different experiences in three different
establishments.

For the first 8 weeks of my training I was appointed to Ceylon Electricity Board. Ceylon
Electricity Board is an excellent place for industrial placement. Ceylon Electricity Board can
provide a very good training for an engineering undergraduate. Almost all the engineers and staff
are very helpful. The main advantage of being trained at the CEB is that the trainees can obtain
an overall knowledge about the Electrical Power Systems as they are circulated among different
sections which cover Generation, Transmission and Distribution. Since CEB is the only
establishment in Sri Lanka which covers all the electrical operations trainees can gain a good
training from CEB. During the 8 weeks I trained at CEB I could train at 8 different places of
CEB which cover lot of areas in electrical systems. And also I got some rare chances to visit
hydro and thermal power stations owned by CEB.

I underwent training at LECO for four weeks. During those four weeks I was appointed to
different places of the company where I was able to cover lot of areas regarding power
distribution. Apart from the electrical functions I was able to obtain a fair knowledge about the
financial areas of the company when I was at the Branch Office. During the period I was at the
Customer Service Center of LECO I could involve lot of maintenance duties and it was a great
experience to me working with the technicians. With the friendly staff at LECO I was able to
solve out doubts I had on many areas of distribution sector. And working with well experienced
engineers helped me to get the best I need for my future career as an engineer.

Chapter 3 Industrial Training Report

I was able to undergo training for 12 weeks in Sri Lanka Ports Authority. Since SLPA is a
massive establishment I could obtain a good knowledge by training at there. SLPA includes
almost all the electrical systems which cover a vast area of electrical sector. During my training
period in Port I was appointed to 8 different workplaces. I could gain valuable experiences
during that time. It was an interesting experience for me to work with the technicians in the
workshops. When I was at the winding workshop I could compare the theories I learnt with the
actual cases. At there I could identify that the actual winding patterns of induction motors are
different than the theoretical patterns. I could obtain a good training when I was at the Jaya
Container Terminal. It was a wonderful experience for me to learn about the cranes. Since cranes
are powered and controlled by electricity by studying the cranes a good knowledge can be
obtained.

Since I was trained only for one week at many places during my training, the time was not
enough for me to cover all the areas. That was the biggest problem that I had to face during my
training period. Only for places one week was enough to obtain the training. In some places there
were no people to ask the technical details due to lack of their knowledge. Another problem I had
to face with is most of the places there was no person to coordinate our training.

I was rotated around different sections and divisions in my whole training period which I can see
as a positive aspect. But more attention should be paid for the training periods and locations
when preparing the schedules.

Finally I can say with a great pleasure that the 24 weeks of industrial training was a helpful
period for me as an engineering undergraduate. I could meet my expectations of training during
the period I underwent training. The experiences I gained through this training program will be a
strong foundation to my career as an engineer. I hope that the university along with NAITA
would continue to conduct such training programs for undergraduates even more effectively and
efficiently.
