My town – Newquay
By Alex Howarth, 14
I live in Newquay. It’s a small town on the Atlantic coast in the south of England. It has got
great beaches and is the best place to surf in the UK. There are lots of surf schools where you
can learn how to surf. I go surfing with my friends every weekend. My favourite place is
Fistral Beach.
I love Newquay because there are lots of other things to do as well as surfing. If you like
water sports, you can go kayaking, water-skiing or coasteering. Coasteering is different
because it is rock climbing, jumping into the sea and swimming in the same activity, but you
should always go with a special instructor.
If you like animals you can also visit the Blue Reef Aquarium and see lots of different fish
and sharks. You can also go horse riding on the beach or visit Newquay Zoo. There are lots
of other attractions too like mini golf and bowling. Come and see for yourself!
Choose no more than three words and/or a number from the text for each
answer.
For each question, write your answer in the space provided.

(Reading Comprehension : Short Answer)
Read the text and answer questions 25-34.
The book Amazon by Chris Palan is a fascinating account of the author’s
travels up and down the famous Amazon River for a period of two and a half
years between 2011 and 2014. It was on The New York Times Best Seller list
for more than six months in 2015.
The book is written in an easy-to-read, conversational style that makes
us imagine we are there on the boat with the author travelling on the
legendary river. The facts are numerous, interesting and fascinatingly
presented.
The book also contains wonderful pictures of beautiful scenery and the
exotic wildlife of the river and the rainforest. Palan and his travelling party
spent time ashore in many villages along the river. Here, we get a glimpse of
the life of the indigenous people inhabiting them.
Palan’s account of the peoples in the Amazon jungle suggests that
they are friendly to visitors. However, they are still wary as many of the
villagers have come face-to-face with the greed of the modern world, which
seeks to exploit the wealth of the jungle. There have been extensive logging
and mining activities that have already destroyed large parts of the jungle.
The locals were driven off the and that their families had been living on for
centuries.
As a consequence of this, Palan expresses his fears for the future of
the Amazon River and jungle. At the same time, he also expresses hope in
ongoing government programmes and activities of non-governmental
organisations helping to protect and restore this great natural treasure of the
world.
This book is indeed a great read for nature-lovers and armchair
adventurers, and I highly recommend it.
