GE102 lab report week 04 (lathe machine)

1) Name of the experiment: Understanding basic working principals of
Conventional lathe machine.
2) Aim of the experiment:
Objectives: Objective of this report is to understand the following
points.
1. Working principal of lathe.
2. Classification of lathe
3. Construction and parts of lathe
4. Specifications of lathe.
5. Lathe operations.
6. Work holding devices.
Name of the machines tools: Here is the list of different types of
parts of lathe machine:
1) Head stock: in this head stock we have different parts like we have
spindle and gears to change the speed and three jaw chuck/ four
jaw chuck to hold our workpiece.
2) Tail stock: used to hold long jobs and for other purposes like
drilling and so on.
3) Bed: It is used to supports head stock, carriage and tail stock and
it is made up of cast iron or nickel cast iron alloy.
4) Carriage: It is used to move cutting tool along lathe bed and has
many other parts like saddle cross-slide, apron, compound rest.
5) Feed rod and lead screw: feed rod is used to move the apron in
forward and backward direction. Turning process is to remove
the material in diameter and facing is to remove the material in
length.
3) Experimental procedure: here we are going to perform two processes
that are turning and facing process.
Facing operation: here we will first hold our cylindrical workpiece by
the help of three jaw chuck. And here we have to reduce the length of
the workpiece. And then we start our spindle and we move the tool
by the help of the wheel in apron
apron.
Turning:
urning: In this process is used to reduce the diameter of our job or
workpiece. In this process
1) we first hold the cylindrical workpiece in three/four jaw chuck.
2) Then we measure the diameter of the cylindrical job by the help of
wernier callipers and also note the final diameter that we want.
3)Then we will match the zero of a circular scale on apron by starting
the machine and note that value.
4) Now we will adjust that scale according to our need but please
notee that whatever the quantity that we want to remove from
diameter we have to set its half on the scale because it will remove
that quantity from both sides.
There are many other operations like Straight turning,, Taper
turning, Chamfering
Chamfering, Under cutting, Grooving, Spinning,
Spinning Forming,
Polishing, Solder turning
turning, Boring, drilling,, etc. But we had not
performed any experiment related to these processes.
4) Output/product formed: Following are the sketches/images of the
different products that can be made by the help of lathe machine. Please
note that we may have to apply more than one lathe operations in making
all these products.
5) Possible limitations:

1) The Initial cost is very high
high.
2) The high skilled worker required for the initial setup
setup.
3) CNC machines can not use for small production
production.
4) Any loose wire may cause a very big danger.
5) We must wear the protective glass otherwise the removed hot chips
may fall in eyes and can create any big danger.
6) The rod which we used to tight the chuck has to be removed otherwise
this may also harm you.
6) Where it helps in Electrical engineering: It has as a wide verity of
applications in almost every industry
industry.. In electrical engineering it might
help in framing the different hardware tools used in electronics industry. It
might helps in designing the outer parts of some machines used in
electrical engineering like some bolts, outer body of transistor, measuring
meters, power supply sources, function generator etc.
7) Conclusions: In this project we have studied about the lathe machine
and get knowledge about all parts of the machine. We have also studied
various lathe operations. We have taken a rough cylindrical part in the
video and made it smooth (laterally and sidewise).
During the manufacturing of some parts, there may occur any defect and
that can also be removed by the help of this lathe machine.
