Apparel sector is the uppermost industrial employment creator and the huge foreign exchange
earner. They Produce a wide range of universal branded clothing such as Nike, Victoria’s secret,
Gap etc. BOI approved ventures account for nearly 90% of Sri Lanka’s total garment export. Sri
Lanka’s apparel and textile industries can be characterized into three groups such as Apparel
companies, Textile mills and finishing plants and companies engaged in accessory manufacture.
The clothing and textile industry had arisen from a modest beginning in the early 1950s. In 1960,
industrial products started to be produced locally. In late 1960’s that Sri Lanka’s readymade
garments stated to break into export markets. In 1970’s prices or wage inflation and imposition
of trade quotas on exports of traditional Asian suppliers of made-up garments. After the late
1970s saw a rapid development of the clothing industry in Sri Lanka. Apparel sector began to
raise significantly in the 1980’s. In 1985, Martin Trust, started working with Sri Lankan apparel
and textile companies. In 1986 and 1987 he established joint venture partnerships with the
Amelean and the Omar group. In 2010, maximum of the exports to the USA are from Sri Lanka.
Garment and Textiles industry has a significant place in Sri Lanka’s economy. The garment and
textiles industry began in 1950. In 1977, economic liberalization policies paved the way for local
handloom and garment industry to come in to the global market. It has become the Sri Lanka’s
biggest export industry since 1986 and also largest net foreign exchange earner since 1992.

Pattern making technology is the art of designing patterns by making templates from which
clothing and craft items can be stitched. A pattern making process really help to come out with
the innovation and imagination of designer from the sketching till real product. They are also
called as 'Technical Designers'. After Fashion Designers complete their costume designing,
Technical Designers begins their work to make the pattern of the garment. The garment making
process contains of different departmental process yet codependent stages.

Pattern making is considered as the first step in apparel production. While creating a garment as
per the design, templates are used to trace the different garment parts of same style into fabric
prior to cutting and assembling. Pattern technologist needs high skilled technique with technical
ability, and competency to interpret the design with
the practical understanding of garment
construction. In today’s world pattern creating has
become an easy job with the use of computers.

marketplace to meet the needs of the manufactures.

technologist much easier and convenient. They
have made the process of pattern making less time
