Activity Title: Sacraments – an Introduction

SACRAMENT and its DEFINITION

1. It comes from the Latin word sacramentum, which refers to the oath of allegiance by which a
Roman soldier pledged his services upon his induction into a legion of the Roman Empire.
2. Sacramentum is from the Greek word mysterion (mystery) used by Saint Paul. He said that it is a
hidden plan according to which God in his eternal good-pleasure intended to save, renew, and
unite all things in Christ.
3. During the early Church’s time, sacraments were mysteries that included the many prayers, rites,
and practices developed in the ancient church.
4. St. Augustine defined sacrament as a holy sign through which a Christian perceives and receives
an invisible grace.
5. St. Thomas Aquinas stated that sacraments are the instruments God uses in causing and
communicating graces of salvation.
6. Today, the Church describes sacraments as efficacious signs of grace, instituted by Christ and
entrusted to the Church, which when received properly bear fruits in the believers.

Answer the following:

1. Efficacious means capable of producing a desired effect. What do you think is the desired effect
of sacraments to you?
2. Grace is the free and undeserved help that God gives us so we can respond to His call. What do
you think is the free and undeserved help that God gives you in this life? What do you think is
the call from God that He asking you to respond?
3. Sacraments are instituted by Christ. What is the significance of this truth to Catholics?

1.Sacraments are observed in order to make God’s love visible. The sacraments are common experiences
of worship in the Christian experience. In the same way that our calendars point to who we are as a
people, the sacraments that we have in place also point to who we are as a people. If someone were to
observe one of our sacraments, it would be easy to distinguish us from other religions. Therefore
sacraments are another way of identifying worshippers of Jesus Christ.

2. I think the free grace for me is the Gift of Life because God allow me to experience what is the real
meaning of it, despite of our sins, God forgive us and give a us a second chance to change. Gods grace
tell us something that we need to be connected with him and communicate with him spiritually.

3. The sacraments are Christ’s own gift that provide us with his grace. They are the divine helps which
God gives us to enable us to: believe the truths of his faith, live according to his moral code ,grow in his
gift of divine life.
