Diamant Drilling Services

Belgian fixed cutters bits

manufacturer
Diamant Drilling Services

Founded over 15 years ago, Diamant Drilling Services (DDS), is a Belgian fixed
cutters bits manufacturer.
Our strength lays in our ability to quickly create and manufacture custom
designs.

The company has inherited a long engineering and manufacturing experience

that allow us to develop a specific drill bit for each application:

• The bit range varies from light set steel body fishtail bits to very heavy
set, or impreg matrix body bits depending of the geology.
• Sizes vary from 3 1/8 to 17 ½’’
• Bit designs can be adapted to any BHA configuration
• Cutters are selected to match the applications.

SP619 The SP619 is a very polyvalent design for big size PDC bits.

The steel body allows a blade design with a high standoff

which is very good in terms of cleaning. Typical lithology
drilled with this design can vary from soft surface formation
(a couple of thousand psi) to medium non-abrasive formation.
This bit has been run successfully on motor or rotary in the
Middle East, water or oil base mud.

SR619

The SR619 is a reinforced version of the previous SP619.

The double row of cutters insure a enhanced quantity of

diamond on the bit shoulder periphery. This make the SR619
more wear resistant and adapted to more demanding
lithology

DDS Bit recommendation for application range
PDC cutter selection

Through test campaigns in lab and field tests validation, Diamant Drilling Services entrust the
renowned names of the diamond industries to manufacture the most appropriate compact cutter
for a specific application

Among all the products available on the market and after selection of the best, Diamant Drilling
Services consider 3 main grades to select:

• Standard: multi-purpose product that suit most of

non-demanding application
• Premium: top of the shelf product in terms of shock
resistance and abrasion
• Phoenix: High quality product with performances at
least equivalent to deep leached product

The PDC PHOENIX cutter is the cutting-edge product used by Diamant Drilling Services in challenging
application. Through a combination of multi layers technology and diamond to carbide interface
shape, this cutter has shown superior thermal resistance to rough solicitation providing enhanced
bit life and drilling performances at least as good as any surface treated cutter.
MicroCORE™ Bit Technology
Product Overview
The MicroCORE™ technology is a one-of-a-kind cutting structure design exclusive to Diamant Drilling
Services . Originally developed for Total, DDS now own the IP and have tried and prove this
technology around the world. The MicroCORE™ guaranties maximum ROP and enhanced cuttings
quality

Instead of wasting energy in center trying to squeeze

the central cutter into the formation, the
MicroCORE™ lets a small core grow in the center of
the bit until it reaches breaking point.

The core is naturally broken by flexion when it

reaches the body (localy reinforced).

The small core is then ejected through the annulus.

The MicroCORE design has been studied (structure

and fluid dynamics) to insure 0 risk of plugging

By comparison with similar conventional drill bits, the MCB brings, thanks to its specific design, the
following benefits:

Optimized Energy: The MicroCORE cutting technology deliver more energy to the cutters than
traditional cuttings structures. Redistributing wasted energy to more efficient cutters means higher
ROP and better quality wellbore

MCB Fragments:
Unique sample of
formation.
Undisturbed Core fragment: Preserved texture and
MicroCORE and MicroCORE’s fragments properties.

Design adaptation to BHA’s and application

All Diamant Drilling Services bit designs can be adapted to different assemblies. The bits have
been run and produced excellent results in terms of drilling but as well in terms of steerability and
DLS on rotary, motor assemblies, RSS push the bit or point the bit technologies.

DDS has conducted numerous tests to confirm the role of designs features in the stability or
steerability of the bits.

DDS recommends to conduct meetings with the BHA companies to adapt the bit designs accordingly.

Bits can be adapted to keep the angle in long horizontal sections, as well as building or dropping
angles in other sections of the wells.

Diamant Drilling Services has the ability to run Rock Strength analysis and full application analysis
and come back to the customer with an appropriate recommendation.
IADC code consist of four characters, indicating bit body, formation type, cutting structure and bit profile.
• First literal code character designates the bit body material (Steel, Matrix or Diamond)
• Second numerical code character (1-8) designates the formation type being drilled (5 has no code)
• Third numerical code character designates drill bit cutting structure (PDC cutter size or other type)
• Fourth numerical code character - bit profile

1- Inner Cutting Structure (Table 1)

The first 2/3 of the radius represents the inner rows (figure 1).
Using a linear scale from 0 – 8, a number is given to cutter wear in
the inner rows of cutters. The grading numbers increase as the
wear increases, with 0 representing no wear, and 8 representing no
usable cutter left. A grade of 4 indicates 50% of cutter wear
2 – Outer Cutting Structure (Table 1)
The outer row of cutters represents the third of the bit radius
(figure 1). Using a linear scale from 0 – 8, a number is given to
cutter wear in the outer rows of cutters.
3 – Dull Characteristics (Table 2)
This is the most prominent or “Primary” physical change from the
new condition of the bit.
4 – Location (Table 3)
The space is used to indicate the location of the primary dull
characteristic noted in the third space. Locations are as designated.
X – Bearings/Seals
This space is only used for roller cone bits. It will always be marked
“X” for fixed cutter bits.
5 – Gauge (Table 4)
This space is used to record the gauge of the bit. The letter “I” (In
Gauge) indicates no gauge reduction. If the bit has any reduction in
gauge it will be recorded in 1/16ths of an inch. A PDC “no go”
gauge is used to ensure a bit is not smaller than allowed and it
should not go or slip down the entire length of the bit. A PDC “go”
gauge ensures a bit is not larger than allowed and should slip down
the entire length of the bit.
6 – Other Dull Characteristics (Table 2)
This space is used to record any dull characteristics of the bit in
addition to the cutting structure dull characteristics listed in Table
2. Such evidence may relate specifically to cutting structure wear as
recorded in the third space, or may note identifiable wear of the bit
as a whole, such as “erosion” or “broken blade”. Many times, this
secondary dull grade indentifies the cause of the dull characteristic
noted in the third space.
7 – Reason Pulled or Run Terminated (Table 5)
This space is used for the two or three letter code to record the
termination of the bit run.
