SPECIFICATION FOR
SPLIT PINS
( Second Revision )
(Incorporating Amendment Nos. 1, 2, 3 & 4)

1. Scope — Prescribes requirements for split pins of nominal size 0.6 to 20 mm.
2. Nomenclature
2.1 Nominal Length ( l ) — The nominal length is the distance from underside of the eye to the
extreme end of the short leg ( see also Appendix A ).

2.2 Nominal Size — The nominal size is the diameter of the hole for receiving the split pins.
3. Dimensions
3.1 The dimensions of the split pins shall be as given in Table 1.
3.2 The preferred length size combinations shall be as given in Table 2.
3.3 The permissible tolerances on the dimensions shall be as indicated in Table 1.
4. Material — Unless otherwise specified, split pins shall be manufactured from half round mild
steel wires conforming to IS : 10794-1984 ‘Mild steel wire for cotter pins’.
5. Finish — Split pins shall be supplied with bright self colour finish unless otherwise specified by
the purchaser. The end of each leg shall be bevelled and shall be free from burrs. The eyes shall be as
round in shape as possible and shall blend into the legs without sharp notches.
6. Designation
6.1 A split pin shall be designated by the nominal size, nominal length, the number of this standard
and material (for other than steel only).
Example 1:
A split pin of nominal size 5, nominal length 50 mm and made of steel, shall be designated as:
Split Pin 5 × 50 — IS : 549
Example 2:
A split pin of nominal size 10, nominal length 80 mm and made of brass, shall be designated as:
Split Pin 10 × 80 — IS : 549 — Brass
7. Shank — The shank shall be straight with both legs parallel throughout the nominal length.
8. Sampling — Sampling and acceptance criteria shall conform to IS : 6821-1973 ‘Methods for
sampling non-threaded fasteners’.
9. Test
9.1 Bending Test — The split pins with nominal diameters up to and including 5 mm shall withstand
being bent twice through an angle of 180° round a former diameter equal to nominal diameter
without showing any sign of fracture.
9.2 The split pins with nominal diameters over 5 mm shall withstand being bent once through an
angle of 180° round a former diameter equal to nominal diameter without showing any sign of
fracture.
10. Packing — Split pins shall be packed in cartons and/or wooden boxes with quantity as specified
below:

11. Marking — Each carton shall be labelled with the manufacturer’s name or initials or
trade-mark, description of contents, particulars of quantity and size of split pins.
11.1 ISI Certification Marking — Details available with the Indian Standards Institution.

SPLIT PIN LENGTH GAUGE
A-1. Length Gauge — The lengths of the split pins may be determined by means of a split pin
gauge as illustrated below:

Metric series’, issued by the International Organization for Standardization.

This edition 3.4 incorporates Amendment No. 3 (December 1983) and Amendment No. 4
(January 1991). Side bar indicates modification of the text as the result of incorporation of the
amendments.
