FUNDAMENTALS OF
MARKSMANSHIP
Once our body position is established, it’s
about the firing sequence. In the past, we’d
tell the shooter to control their breathing,
giving it that slight pause before breaking
the shot. Today, we look at the natural
respiratory pause, breaking at the bottom
of our exhale while avoiding the urge to
hold your breath. Think about this exhale
movement. The worst thing you can do
under these elevated conditions is hold
your breath. So, we breathe through and
merely break the bottom of our natural
respiratory cycle.
Trigger control, or the manipulation of
the trigger without disturbing the lay of
the sights, sounds easy, but it’s our most
significant point of error. We combine
trigger control with follow-through—the
act of physically and mentally holding the
shot on target. In our mind’s eye, we want
to follow the bullet to the target until the

shoulder when all you have to do is pull
back and push forward just 2½ inches!
A feature the RX shares with the Bla-
ser is that it must be manually cocked
before the first shot can be fired. The
action is cocked by forcibly pushing a
deeply serrated cocking lever up a steep
incline at the back of the receiver; doing
so compresses the mainspring. Depress--
ing a small release button at the front off
the thumb piece allows it to be backed
down, relaxing the spring.

01 Brownell’s
BRN-Proto AR-15
If you long for the good, ol’ days, Brownell’s is
currently humming your tune. A faithful replica a
of Stoner’s first prototype, the BRN-Proto is a
historically accurate rendition with features not
found on later iterations. Brownell’s drilled down
into the minutiae to pull off the rifle, basing it on
AR-15 Serial Number One. And the company’s
attention to detail is breathtaking: “slick-side”
upper receiver, oversized AR-10 handguard,
“duckbill” flash suppressor and a front sight that
mirrors the No. 1’s. Most striking is the BRN-Pro-
to’s brown polymer stock, which replicates the
look of the prototype’s fiberglass furniture—but
not its weakness. All that, and the throwback
AR is a shooter, too, chewing through 5.56 NATO
with the precision of a modern rifle. It’s like new,
but it’s old … but it’s still like new.

AR-15 PISTOL
03 Springfield Armory
Saint Edge Pistol
Taking its top-shelf black rifle small, Spring-
field Armory aims at agility and firepower with
the Saint Edge Pistol. Following on the heels
of an SBR model (which was just as stellar),
the abbreviated firearm boasts the top-level
features that made the NFA version a hit: the
Accu-Tite tension system, an enhanced M16 bolt
carrier group, free-floating M-Lok-compatible
handguard, flip-up sights, A-2 flash suppressor
and forward hand stop (a nice touch, given its
10-inch barrel). The belle of the ball on the nearly
6-pound 5.56 NATO pistol is its Maxim Defense
CQB brace. Built like a brick latrine, the unit boasts
twin adjustable steel struts with nearly 2 inches
of play that ensure the Edge is deadly accurate,
whether shot with one hand or two.
