Brief History of Cagayan Timeline

Cagayan province in northern Luzon, Philippines originated from the name of a plant called tagay. Juan de Salcedo was the first European to arrive in 1567 and founded several towns, including Abulug in 1572 where he encountered the Ibanag people. Over subsequent decades, more towns were established by Spanish authorities and missionaries across Cagayan, with Tuguegarao becoming the provincial capital in 1841. The province continued to expand through the founding and reorganization of municipalities into the 20th century.

BRIEF HISTORY OF CAGAYAN

Cagayan – derived from the name of a plant (tagay)


 Juan de Salcedo – first European to test foot on the area particularly Massi
(Pamplona), Tular, & Aparri
 1567 – Juan de Salcedo landed on Mission, Buguey
 1572 – Juan de Salcedo reached Abulug and found the Ibanags who were known as the
descendants of the Indonesians
 The first municipality of Cagayan was founded on the banks of Abulug river on
the site now known as “Dana-Ili”
 Local historians claim that Abulug was formerly called “Tulug” or “Tular”
could be the same places
 1581 – Juan Pablo Carrion, commanded a fleet then went upstream and founded Nueva
Segovia (Lallo)
 1594 – founded the Lallo church
 1596 –Abulug was formally established
 1604 – Tuao was founded by civil authorities and ecclesiastically accepted on May 13,
1612 one municipality
 1617 – foundation of Tuguegarao
 1690 – (May 11) Aparri was separated from its mother towns Camalanuigan and
Buguey
 1734 – (Dec. 15) Amulung was officially founded
 1761-68 – construction of the present Tuguegarao Cathedral
 1787 – (Oct. 20) founding of Alcala (Fulay)
 1839 – (May 24) Cagayan covered the area from Aparri to Tumauini
 The seat of government was transferred from Lallo to Tuguegarao
 1841 – the capital of Cagayan was transferred to Tuguegarao
 1849 – (Jan. 20) foundation of Enrile known as “Cabug” up to 1863
 1851 - Solana was founded
 1856 - Foundation of the town of Claveria
 1877 - Gattaran, Dummun, and Nassiping were merged into one municipality
 1894 - Official founding of Sanchez Mira. Declared as town by a Royal Decree
 1896 – Penablanca was separated from Tuguegarao
 Baggao once a barrio of Amulung became a separate town by a Royal Decree
 1911- Sta. Cruz (Ballesteros) became a town in memory of Fray Ballesteros
 1914 – Renaming of Sto. Nino to Faire
 1915 – Buguey was granted town status
 1918 – Creation of Gonzaga as municipality. It is formerly barrio “Wangag” of
Buguey
 1920 – Aparri took Calayan under its wing
 Sta. Praxedes was established under E.O # 21
 1928 – Allacapan, formerly a province of Apayao, finally turned over to Cagayan. It
gained the status of municipality
 1950 – Sta. Ana – was inaugurated municipality on March 6
 1963 - foundation of Sta. Theresita in honour of Gov. Teresa Dupaya
 1950 – (June 13) creation of municipality of Lasam
 Piat – known as “Antipolo of the Northern Luzon” because of its pilgrim and tourist
drawer, the “Miraculous Lady of Piat” (Nuestros Senora de Vecitation”
 Created into municipality during the Spanish regime
 The image of “Our Lady of Piat” was brought by father Diego Ponero from
Macao to Lallo on May 1, 1610
 Iguig- it is where the “bebengka” originated. It was cooked and baked in pots called
“abbabengkan”
 During fiesta, Zambalu, a ritualistic dance is performed
 Rizal – originally named as Malaueg
 Founded in the early 70’s
 It is the “Epic Town of Cagayan” where Cagayanos epic heroes and
legendary figures Biuag and Malana were said to had fought their epic battle
 Malaueg officially became Rizal by the virtue of History Act # 2390 passed on
February 28, 1914
