Monologue "Language" (Module 4)
Is a foreign language a fashion or a necessity? I think, nowadays it is very
important to know foreign languages. Knowledge of foreign languages helps to get
by with many things encountered in our life. Learning foreign languages broadens
our minds, people become educated. In my opinion, languages are especially
important for those who work in different fields of science and technology, in
politics. Besides, a foreign language helps to know the native language better.
There are also international languages – these are languages spoken around the
world. For example, English is spoken by about a billion people. Such languages
are established to standardize the international community.
There are many reasons why people learn foreign languages. Firstly, there
are people who travel often and it is important for them to develop relationships
with people from other countries. Secondly, knowledge of foreign languages in
another country allows us to give a broad understanding of culture. Thirdly, for
some people, knowledge of a foreign language symbolizes the path to success and
gives them the opportunity to not fall behind in a career.
There are several ways to learn foreign languages these days. People learn
foreign languages better and faster if they know how to adapt to different dialects
and have a lot of patience to learn the basic rules, develop an accurate
pronunciation and a good accent. As a result, they will receive a special certificate
and be able to speak fluently in a foreign language and hold intelligent
conversations with native speakers. I want to attend a fully supported course to
speak in plain English because I find this to be the most comfortable and reliable
way to learn a language. Also, on courses, you work in a team, and this didn't
allow you fall behind in language learning.
I think that knowing English has advantages over other foreign languages.
English is a widely-spoken language. In addition, it is a working language of the
United Nations. It is the language that will help you take a prominent in
international business and it is the lingua franca of technology and dominate in
today's youth culture.
Besides English, Chinese is also becoming popular now. Undoubtedly, it is
the Chinese language that will prevail in 50-100 years. It differs from other
languages in its complexity, but lately there are more and more native Chinese
speakers. China is also building up its global influence through a rapidly growing
economy and the latest technology.
It may seem that communicating online is much easier than talking in real
life, but this is not always the case. A person on the Internet can create confusion
by incorrectly define a register, making spelling and grammatical mistakes or using
inappropriate language, all of which can lead people to talk at cross purposes.
Misunderstandings can lead to big problems particularly if it is communication
between large companies from different countries.
To avoid mistakes, adhere to the following tips: try to find the right balance
between using formal and informal style, use correct grammar and spelling, use
correct and appropriate language, proofread one’s writing text. To avoid scammers
on the Internet, try to post less personal information on social networks.
To sum up, I believe that in our time it is very important to know foreign
languages. Some people learn languages to build trust with their foreign friend or
because they need them for their work, others travel abroad, for the third it’s just a
hobby. Pay more attention to the English language, because if you acquire the
language, it will help you in the future. Follow the rules of communication, not
only in real life, but also on the Internet, then you can correctly convey your
message to the interlocutor, without distorting its meaning.
