how to reduce damage
and loss of life and
property during
earthquakes?
We cannot prevent natural earthquakes from
occurring but we can significantly mitigate
their effects by identifying hazards, building
safer structures, and providing education on
earthquake safety. By preparing for natural
earthquakes we can also reduce the risk from
human induced earthquakes.
ANCHOR LARGE APPLIANCES
TO WALLS USING SAFETY
CABLES OR STRAPS
Install ledge barriers on shelves
and secure large, heavy items and
breakables directly to shelves to
keep them from falling. Install
latches on drawers and cabinet
doors to keep contents from
spilling.
STAY AWAY FROM BOOKCASES,
FURNITURE, AND HEAVY
APPLIANCES THAT MAY FALL.
The shelter must be under a
table or bed, and hold on to a
post or any other fixture. If one
is outdoors, the shelter must be
taken in a clear stop away from
buildings, trees, and power lines.
DUCK, COVER, AND
HOLD
Duck down to the floor,
take cover under a sturdy
table or desk, and hold on
until the shaking stops.
Remember: Avoid danger
spots near windows,
hanging objects, mirrors,
or tall furniture.
AWARENESS, EDUCATION,
PREPAREDNESS, AND PREDICTION
AND WARNING SYSTEMS
They can reduce the disruptive impacts of a
natural disaster on communities. Mitigation
measures such as adoption of zoning, land-use
practices, and building codes are needed, however,
to prevent or reduce actual damage from hazards.
