All About Medieval Knights
In the Middle ages knights were needed. They became very important. They came from
well respected and honorable families. They were recruited by their lords. Knights were
usually 21 years old. They were young. They had to earn their right on the battlefield.
Knights started training when they were 7 years old. They trained to fight on horses and
they participated in many competitions and tournaments to prove themselves and
showcase their fighting skills and how they would do in battle to be chosen. In battle,
they were provided with weapons, armor and defensive clothing. Knights used weapons
such as long swords, battle axes, daggers, metal headed maces, and wooden lances
with iron tips. Knights also used shields to defend themselves. Knights wore chainmail
and plate armor in battle. Chainmail armor was a long cloak made out of metal rings.
They wore another cloak underneath their armor to cushion the weight.
Medieval knights were admired and respected. Knights weren’t selfish and they were
always willing to risk their lives and help any way that they could. They would train and
learn to fight and serve their Lord to honor the code of chivalry. Knights would protect
castles where their Lord lives. They were bodyguards for their Lord and in return they
were given food, armor, weapons, horses, a home, and money. Knights dedicated their
lives to their job. If knights were born from a noble family or their father was a knight
they would be expected to become a knight too and when they turned 7 they would be
sent off to a noble to start their training.
Knights had to follow a strict code of chivalry which is a medieval knight system with its
religious, moral, and social code. They followed the code of chivalry by being loyal,
honest, honoring and serving their lord. If the knights failed to follow the code of chivalry
their shields would be broken and they would be put to death by their own sword and
then they had a mock funeral.
Medieval knights were responsible for winning their battles and also losing them. Their
battles were very dangerous, It was hard for them to travel long distances. Their armor
was very heavy. The weather was constantly changing. They didn’t have much food or
fresh water on their journey. It got really hot at times, They got stabbing wounds, and
got pierced with arrows in battle, but they were very brave and committed to their job
even though it was dangerous and their life was at risk in battle. Sometimes knights got
knocked off of their horse and someone would take off their helmet and kill them with
ease. Some were killed by the plague, and sickness infections. They were wealthy but
some didn’t get to live long. Knights would fight to the death just to kill their enemies in
battle. They were not scared. In battle when the knights were beginning to fight, they
would be far from each other and they would charge towards each other on their horses
waiting to get close enough to strike their enemy. When two knights fight each other one
on one it was called single combat and the two knights would fight each other to the
death while a huge group of knights watched them and cheered. Knights would get tired
fast in battle. They usually got tired when they got across the battlefield, so battle for
knights was very exhausting for them. Knights battles would last up to 2 to 5 hours and
both sides would withdraw if neither had won.
After battles, some knights suffered from post traumatic stress disorder because of the
violence in the battles. Many people believe that knights enjoyed killing but it actually
had a huge negative impact on them after battle. They killed because it's their job and
they were committed to it. In medieval times knights would usually live up to 30, but
some lived until they were 60. Knights were often sleep deprived, they would have to
sleep outside on the ground in whatever kind of weather it was. In the everyday life of a
knight they would wake up and pray, eat a meal, and discuss their battle plans and
strategy, and discuss their weaponry, and they would increase their battle knowledge
and their battle skill.
Knights would go hunting for fun, they would usually eat roasted meat such as chicken,
pig, rabbit and other kinds of meat, they would also eat vegetables such as cabbage,
carrots, and onions and other foods like porridge, gruel and fruits. Some of knights'
hobbies were jousting, archery, wrestling, and hammer throwing. Some other things
knights did for fun were competing at tournaments, joining festivals, feasts, and other
activities but, it was rare for knights to be able to do this because they rarely had free
time.
After researching knights it seems like it was a very tough job that required bravery and
commitment. It was very dangerous but they were also very brave and committed to
their job. The job of a knight came with benefits for them but it also had a lot of
disadvantages such as not having a lot of free time and the danger the job brings and
how it affects their mental health and their everyday lives.
