It also provides example answers for each of the EXAM. How important are academic writing skills for exam success? The IELTS test requires candidates to be able to use a wide range of writing skills. In Task 1, candidates may be required to describe data presented in one or more graphs, charts or tables. Alternatively, they may have to describe a diagram of a machine, a device or a process and be asked to explain how it works. They may also be required to describe a map and to either evaluate the suitability of two possible development sites or to describe changes that have occurred in a place over time. Candidates will need to demonstrate an ability to identify the most important and relevant information in a graph, chart, table, map or diagram and to organise their answer well, using language accurately in an academic style. In Task 2, candidates are asked to write a discursive essay | about a given topic and are required to write a response which is fully relevant to the specific question set. This task evaluates the candidate's ability to present a clear argument, which is relevant and well-organised. ‘The activities in this book introduce candidates to each of the Task 1 and Task 2 question types in turn and provide tips on structuring answers logically as well as on avoiding common pitfalls. Example answers are also provided for candidates to analyse and to use asa guide. There is also an example answer for each of the EXAM TASKS in the Answer Key at the back of the book. To achieve a score of 4,0 to 5.5 in the IELTS Writing test, candidates need to organise ideas into an appropriate structure, and they need to write in a style which is appropriate for answering an exam question. They need to use vocabulary which is relevant to the topic and accurate for making their intended points, and they need to use suitable grammar to convey concepts accurately and to link ideas, though, at this level, they are not expected to use complex grammatical structures accurately. The lessons in this book offer extensive guidance and practice opportunities for structuring answers and for writing in an appropriate style. They also ude useful vocabulary connected with popular IELTS | topics and grammar practice which is useful for various basic functions in academic writing such as describing trends or expressing cause and effect relationships. mesneron ous ser wan eas 03s) Povoer) Workin pai 5. Other people think that there are too many exams and this is stressful for ‘many students. In this essay, | will discuss this issue and give my own opinion. Exams are not necessarily the best way to test someone's intelligence. Maybe they only test how good student is at doing exams. A student who is relaxed in exams may get a much better grade than another student who is very stressed or just having a bad day. Also, many exams only testa student's knowledge of a subject or what they have learned in lessons. They do not always test important skills like dealing with people or thinking creatively. Ofcourse, itis necessary to have some kind of system for testing students. Otherwise, there would be no ‘guarantee that a student actually knew anything about a subject. Imagine a world in which doctors, dentists ‘and pilots could do their jobs without being tested in some way. In conclusion, exams are not a perfect system, but they are the only system we have. Working too much can damage people's health, their relationships and their quality ofife. This problem is sometimes referred to as ‘work-life balance’ In this essay, | will discuss the cause of this problem and possible solutions. 2 I think there are two main causes of people working very long hours. The frst causes that employers expect too ‘much. Instead of thinking of their employees as human beings, they think of them as machines, and they want them to do as much work as possible. The second cause is other employees in the organisation. Ifa person works the minimum number of hours each week, their colleagues may judge that person negatively or not doing their fair share of work. 3 I think the solution is very simple. Every job should have a contract with a fixed number of hours. People could work extra hours ifthey wanted to, but they would receive extra pay for this, I believe that this would be better for employees and better for the employers. in my opinion, relaxed, happy people usually do better work than tired, stressed people. 4 In conclusion, think that problems with work-life balance are caused by the expectations of both employers and employees. The best way to solve this problem would be to have contracts with fixed hours and to encourage ‘people not to work longer than they need to. (3a) Makea plan for the Task 2 essay.
