GROWTH INDICATORS
Indian Economy has registered a healthy growth rate of
more than 9 % during 2005-06 and 2006-07. 9% growth in
GDP expected to continue.
With elasticity of 2.15 between GDP and container traffic
growth, container traffic should grow more than 19% per
annum in coming years for GDP growth @9%.
Container traffic by 2012 is expected to cross 14 Million
TEU mark from existing 6.2 Million TEU.
1.5 million TEU by rail expected to increase to 7.5 million
TEU in 5 years
HISTORICAL IMPRINTS
• 1966 – First train carrying IRS containers
moved by IR
• 1972 – First IS container lands at Indian
port
• 1981 – First ICD established by IR
• 1988 – CONCOR incorporated
• 2006- Double Stack Container train
introduction on IR– 75 kmph.
• 2007 – Trials conducted for DSC on flat
wagons at 100 kmph and 22 tonne axle
load

Existing Container Traffic
Scenario
• Western Sector ports account for more
than 70% of total container traffic in India.
• During last three years, growth on
Western Sector ports was about 17%
against 15.6% all India Growth.
• 85% of CONCOR trains carrying EXIM
containers are run for Western Sector.
• 75% trains are for ICDs located in Delhi,
Western UP, Haryana and Punjab.

Setting up of new ports and terminals with

Entry of Private Operators in Container Train

Introduction of Double Stack container rains to
Pipavav and Mundra Ports.
