“In sPIte of my poor
memory...”
David TrustmanPI Introduction eycaresin
Welcome to the fabulous world of Pi! An amazing number with alll sorts of true, and false,
stories about its effect on the world around us.
In these pages you will find a simple set of mnemonic images designed to be memorized.
‘There is a pie theme of course, so enjoy this little slice of Pil
Before we set off to memorize the first 100 places of Pi, we need to learn a little trick. We are
going to take numbers and convert them into letters. In this case we are going to start
simple. Our numbers will look like the letters we are replacing.
With these letters we will create words. The words will be turned into images or totems. In
this example the number 96 would be a Pig.
‘You will be provided a series of totems, broken down in a particular manner, that represent
the entire first 100 places of Pi. It is recommended to print these pages, and with that in
mind I have kept this as concise as possible.
‘Now, some of you who follow my work might say “David, this is far simpler a design than the
work you share on social media or The Expert at the Card Table Graphic Novel. What up
with that?”
And you would be right! This Pi download is done in the art style it needs to get the job done
for YOU, the budding mnemonist! If you want to stop at 100 places of Pi, you can after a
short while with this packet. But, if you want to add more, you have a base to work from.
After the image section we will discuss performance ideas.
Let's get to the memory work.
Happy memorizing!PI Locations
The mnemonic device known as a Memory Palace
or Path is a series of known locations that contain
certain bits of information. This information can
be recalled in order, or any order.
Using a visual mnemonic you will notice that each
Pie related location is also in the shape of a
number. Typically we would start a count with
the number 1, but for the sake of this, we need to
start at O.
‘Take a moment to imagine yourself interacting
with each location; smells, temperature and so on.
‘You're going to be visiting these locations again,
80 get to know them!PI Locations Explained
Each Location holds 10 digits, or a set. Each
number set is divided in groups of 3-3 - 4. (or
XXX-XXX-XXKX)
The 0 location holds pi digits 0 through 9. In this
case we are considering 3 in the O position (from
3.14...) So 3.14 189 2653 would be places
0,1,2,-8,4,5,-6,7,8,9
With this in ming, all numbers that begin with a1
in the tens position will be found in the 1 (candle)
location. Meaning 10 through 19 are in this
location. If you want to recall the 67th number
you would go to the Cherry Location and look at
the second number of the third group.

Here we add the totems created by our mnemonic
alphabet. There is a sequence. It is always left to
right, top to bottom-Just like reading english!
‘Take each location by itself, And relax! RELAX!
this isn't something to get stressed about.
‘Mnemonics are fun. Enjoy these images and make
asilly story out of them, in order! Always pay
attention to order. If you are remembering the
final four digits (7067 or Taco goat) make sure
the taco is noted first. This will keep confusion to
a minimum. Ifyou remember a goat eating a taco,
you will be confused in the recall.PI Locations & Totems
On this page you will find the totem
translations. This is a quick reference guide.
‘When memorizing, lay this page and the
previous page side by side. Use the Linking
‘Method as you are memorizing. We'll use the
O-Square as an example:
‘The MoLe, has a Hole, shooting a LaSer and Pie,

MoLe Hole something doesn’t work, adjust it until it does.

KNoCk BeePPI Performances
Pi has a number of fun ways to be performed.
1) Show off! Hither recite it or write it out as fast as you can. 100 places should be written
out in about 45 seconds on a whiteboard with just a little practice.
2) Make it a small challenge! Write the blocks of Pi on numbered sections. Ten groups of ten
places called back at random is a pretty good demonstration.
3) Increase the difficulty a little. Reduce the blocks to your 3-3-4 structure.
4) Show off like a memory god! You now know not only 100 places of pi, but with a tiny bit
of work, you will realize you know the 17th, 42nd, and 99th places of Pi by their single
digit! If some one turns over a card with the place number 30, you'll see a P or 9!
5) Figure out more ways to reveal Pil Memory demonstrations are as boring, or as EXCIT-
ING as you make them. Test them out on friends first. If someone isn’t amazed, or requires
an explanation of why they should be amazed, rework your performance.
Practice your recall as well. It doesn’t take much to get this into your head, but it does take
a little work to recall quickly. Practice writing it out. Time yourself. Beat your time. Beat it
again.
My best advice to performing memory feats is to simply fiind a song with a good, building
dramatic pace, and choreograph your reveal to it. This isn't a song you have to play for
your performance but rather the one you will play inside your head to keep the rythym of
‘the demonstration.
This one little trick will change a basic performance into a gripping one.
Lastly, have fun! Mnemonios are fun. Enjoy them. Enjoy being the person you become with
an amazing memory.
Ihopy you enjoy this little slice of Pil
