Road Shoulder Construction Guide

This document provides specifications for constructing soil shoulders along roads. It outlines 3 key steps: 1) setting out the limits and levels of the shoulder, 2) preparing the ground by trimming, leveling, and compacting the existing shoulder, and 3) placing and compacting the shoulder material in layers. It specifies the resources needed including material, equipment, manpower, and safety procedures to control traffic during construction and protect workers. The work is to be supervised, inspected, and tested according to the inspection and test plan to ensure quality.

4. Flow Chart
Step 1 – Setting out

Step 2 – Ground Preparation

Step 3 – Placing and compaction of Shoulder material

5. Sequence of shoulder construction

Step 1 –Setting out

The limits and levels of the designed road shoulder at every 20m interval (lesser
interval at the curves) shown in the construction drawings or directed by the Engineer
at site shall be marked by fixing timber pegs. The height to be filled shall be
demarcated by stretching a string line between pegs.

Step 2–Ground preparation

The areas of embankment construction are already completed ground preparation for
shoulder construction is not required. The existing shoulder shall be trimmed, leveled
and shaped to get the minimum filling thickness of 150mm. The trimming leveling
and shaping shall be carried out manually in small section and by motor grader in
large sections. Excavated soil shall be removed from the site to disposal yards using
backhoe loader and dump trucks or farm tractors. The leveled surface of existing
shoulder shall be compacted using rammers or rollers to suit the site requirements.

Step 3 –Placing and Compaction of shoulder material

First the shoulder material collected from the borrow pits should be tested and
submitted for approval. The routine tests on shoulder material shall be carried out for
maintain the quality continuing basis. The already approved shoulder material from
borrow pits shall be transported by dump trucks. Material shall be spread in 225mm
layer thickness by manually or mini loader. If required, material shall be sufficiently
wetted or dry up at or near the Optimum Moisture Content (OMC). The material shall
be compacted with 5ton/10ton roller in wider sections and rammer/1ton roller in
strips. The shoulder material shall be compacted to a density not less than 100% of
maximum dry density as determined by the standard compaction test. The field
density test shall be carried out for the section compacted in every 200 m2 and field
moisture should be checked in every 100m2
To confirm the lines and levels stipulated, the finished lines and levels of the
completed shoulder shall be checked with the design finish level of the shoulder.
